The doctor and nurses [at FCI] were excellent. The blood draw was even pleasant and I hate needles. The ultrasound technician was a little quiet, but very competent. The front desk was good, but some team members there could use a little more of an empathetic approach when interacting with patients...Stephanie and Laura were amazing. They were empathetic, compassionate, intelligent, and timely. Stephanie knew exactly how to relate to me. Her and I formed a very special bond and I really cherish her treatment during this time in my life.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Rapisarda never made me feel rushed. He explained my diagnosis and treatment options as many times as I needed to fully understand. During my first visits, I was an emotional wreck. It was extremely difficult to grasp I could not get pregnant on my own (or that my chances were very low). I came in with a very negative mindset and slowly I began to trust Dr. Rapisarda and the process. I began to understand the science behind the treatment. He was very neutral, never giving me false hope and never telling me it was going to happen. I really appreciated the level of hope he was giving me because it felt realistic.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Stephanie and Laura were amazing. They were empathetic, compassionate, intelligent, and timely. Stephanie knew exactly how to relate to me. Her and I formed a very special bond and I really cherish her treatment during this time in my life.
How was your experience with John Rapisarda?
Dr. Rapisarda is a very competent, intelligent, even keel doctor. His bedside manner is exactly what I was looking for. Very calm and warm, but also very subtle and neutral in his demeanor and approach. I really appreciated this since I was the opposite in my demeanor. I was on edge and nervous about ever getting pregnant and needed someone to bring me back to a calm place and explain things in terms I could understand. He is extremely patient and never rushed through any explanations. The only thing I would have wanted more of is to have communicated with him directly during times that were a challenge. I understand it is very difficult since he has so many patients. though.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Rapisarda?
Trust the process and Dr. Rapisarda. He knows what he is doing. It may not work the first time or the second time, but he will find the right "recipe" to make your dream of having a child come true. Be patient and don't stop living during this time. Try to enjoy your life even during this emotional time. Most importantly, reach out to women and couples who have been there. They are your biggest supporters!
Describe the protocols John Rapisarda used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was not a candidate for chlomid. I started with IVF and it was cancelled due to poor response and converted to an IUI cycle that did not work. A few months later, Dr. Rapisarda put me on a different protocol for IVF that did work.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Rapisarda.
My insurance covered my treatment. I only had to pay co-pays.

Their [FCI] hours were very convenient for me. I was able to come in before work for my testing which made the process much less stressful for me since I did not have to worry about taking time off from my job...I loved Jessica. She was responsive and always compassionate. Prior to visiting FCI, we had an early loss about a year prior. I was nervous about both my ability to get pregnant and stay pregnant. She was understanding to both of those issues and help alleviate my fears.

How was your experience with John Rapisarda?
My husband and I had a good experience with Dr. Rapisarda. He was open and honest with us about our situation. He spoke bluntly while remaining positive about his ability to help us with our specific situation. The game plan was very clear from the beginning. He made sure we were comfortable with the procedures we were going to undertake and did not push us to do anything we were not comfortable with. We only met with him three times - once during our initial consult, once after initial testing was completed and then an exit meeting after we became pregnant.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Rapisarda?
Be your own advocate. Dr. Rapisarda is very open and understanding and willing to work with his patients to achieve their goals in a way that is comfortable for them. He will be honest with you regarding what will and will not work but you should feel comfortable speaking up about your questions and comfort with procedures
Describe the protocols John Rapisarda used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was diagnosed with weak ovulation, low progesterone and a possible mild case of PCOS. I was ovulating on my own each month but my levels were slightly below the normal range. I was prescribed Clomid and then used Crinone progesterone after ovulation. I got pregnant on my second cycle of Clomid
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Rapisarda.
My costs were reasonable. I did not have extensive or invasive procedures. Many of the diagnostic procures were covered by my insurance.

I don't need a lot of hand-holding- I just needed someone to get me pregnant and that is what Dr. Beltsos did after IVF cycle #1. I felt like she did listen to me when we met and answered all of my questions.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Angeline N. Beltsos?
Come to any appointment with questions.
Describe the protocols Angeline N. Beltsos used in your cycles and their degree of success.
One month Lupron shot in preparation for IVF #1. Daily Lupron shots, Gonal-f, Menopur, Crinone. Cycle produced 10 eggs, 6 mature, 3 fertilized with ICSI, 1 transferred, 1 frozen. Cycle was a success and daughter was born in 2013. Frozen cycle #1- daily Lupron shots, Minivelle patches, Estradiol, Crinone. 1 frozen embryo transferred, resulted in miscarriage at 7 weeks. IVF cycle #2- Gonal-f, Menopur, dexamethasone. Slow to respond and I only have two mature follicles; cycle is transferred to a IUI. BFN. Prior to IVF cycle #3- Schoyer protocol with Ganerelix and Minivelle patches to hopefully stimulate ovaries to make more eggs next cycle. Amazingly got pregnant naturally during this protocol so no need for IVF.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
Thankfully they scheduled monitoring appointments for early in the morning so that you could get your ultrasound and bloodwork done before heading into work. A couple of times it was difficult to get an early appointment though.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline N. Beltsos.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
The clinic offered very early morning appointments starting at 6:30am which helped balance work and appointments. I didn't have to take any time off for regular monitoring appointments with the earliness of the appointments. The clinic was always very clean and I felt safe. There were times when I had to travel to other FCI clinics for monitoring appointments and all the FCI clinics had a very nice atmosphere.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Nani took the time to always answer any questions myself of my husband had during the process. She didn't make us feel like any question was silly. She met with my husband and I after every IVF transfer regardless of the outcome.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
The nursing staff at FCI - Lindenhurst was great! They have a passion for what they do and are always available to answer any question you may have. I was able to email the nurse my questions with a response by end of the day. By the time I got my positive pregnancy result I felt like the entire team was happy and excited for me. We had become very close with how frequently I had appointments. That friendliness helped ease the stress of the entire process. Upon graduation myself and the staff were in tears of joy and sadness to leave them. I really felt like we a team going through this journey.
How was your experience with Jane Nani?
Dr Nani was very optimistic about our outcome even when things looked like they should work and they didn't, she never lost hope. Having that reassurance was a great help when going through such a hopeless time. We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Dr Nani did get more involved in our cycles once we started the IVF process versus the earlier pills & injectable cycles. During the early cycles she was more involved behind the scenes rather than in person. Dr Nani even made sure she did one of the transfers for us to help ease our minds that it wasn't working because of a dr error. FCI has a rotation of doctors who perform the retrievals and transfers so it was a comforting feeling to see her plan our cycle around when her rotation fell on the schedule. Dr Nani was always very friendly and helpful during everything!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jane Nani?
Don't be afraid to ask questions and learn about your process. She will tell you everything she thinks you need to know but its a complex process and there will be things you don't know that having clarification on will help get you involved in your journey.
Describe the protocols Jane Nani used in your cycles and their degree of success.
#1. The first cycle we did was a simple clomid cycle with timed intercourse. The result was negative. This was done because Dr Nani wanted to start off simple and see how my body responded to the medication. #2 - #3. We did two more additional clomid cycles due to insurance requirement of 3 clomid cycles before moving to a more progressive treatment of injectables. We did one timed interocurse and one IUI with these cycles. Both cycles ended with negative results. During these cycled Dr Nani begin to test my vitamin D and thyroid levels to ensure they were in the right ranges. They were not so we had to adjust with medication. #4. This cycle was an injectable cycle with IUI. Dr Nani felt this would help be a little more forceful of a cycle as it was possible the clomid was diminishing my egg quality. The result was negative. During this cycle we noticed my husband's sperm count was starting to drop and it was suggested we move onto IVF due to my increasing age and strong desire to get pregnant. #5. This was a fresh 5 day transfer IVF cycle. I was monitored to ensure I didn't encounter OHSS and I'm happy to say that I didn't encounter any post-op problems with over stimulation. I did produce 15 eggs and they were able to fertilize 7 with the ICSI process. All 7 made it to the 5 day stage (Grade A) and we decided to transfer just a single egg on our first transfer. #6. This was a FET cycle where we transferred two embryos. Dr Nani performed this transfer to ensure there were no problems doing the transfer. The result was negative. This cycle Dr Nani to recommend another saline ultrasound to verify everything looked good and do a blood check for natural killer cells. It resulted that my NK count was slightly elevated and my saline ultrasound came back perfect. #7. This was another FET cycle where we transfered two embryo's. Due to my higher NK cell count Dr Nani added an inter-lipids infusion prior to transfer to help decrease my NK cell count, which worked in decreasing my count to a safe level. The result of this cycle was a positive! We are currently expecting one little boy May 2016.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jane Nani.
I work for a company in Wisconsin and live in Illinois so my insurance coverage was slightly different than if my company was from Illinois. The monitoring appointments typically cost around $200 with ultrasound and bloodwork. For the IVF cycles I was able to work with Dr Nani to ensure that the cost could stay within my lifetime maximum covered by my insurance. I think in total we spent $6,000 out of our pocket over the year of treatments for all the medications and appointments (including egg retrieval and three transfer cycles).

Because it [FCI] is a large practice, some procedures may not actually be done by Dr. Rodgers. My egg retrieval was performed by another doctor, but I never once felt my quality of care was compromised. Dr. Rodgers will try her best to make sure she can perform transfers and any surgeries you may need. We had a slight issue with the billing department because they did not send my husband's initial testing through insurance. Because of this, we had to pay out of pocket. Once they did send it though, they were very slow to issue a refund and would not issue it until my account was also paid off. We have finally received the refund, but that process took longer than expected.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Fertility Centers of Illinois is a large clinic, but they do have many smaller offices in the suburbs. Almost all of the blood work and ultrasound appointments, and meeting with Dr. Rodgers will be at your home office. Sometimes you may have to go to the River North location for an appointment or two, but that depends on the cycle you are in. For example, during IVF I had to have weekend monitoring appointments so I had to go to River North. Because it is a large practice, some procedures may not actually be done by Dr.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Rodgers has personally called me on multiple occasions. She called me when I had to cancel an IUI cycle, she called me with my final fertilization report, and she shared personal experiences while I was miscarrying. I recently had a hysterscopy and D&C performed and she sat in bed with me to discuss my results. She also called me the next day to see how I was doing.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Amber is definitely my go to. Whenever I have questions she is quick to e-mail or call me back with answers. She is incredibly compassionate and knowledgable. Her coordination with Dr. Rodgers is amazing and I always feel like I am getting the best care. At times I felt incredibly overwhelmed with the process, but Amber always put my mind at ease. She has made this journey tolerable and I cannot imagine having a better nurse to help me through the process.

How was your experience with Allison Rodgers?
When I first met with Dr. Rodgers, I was extremely nervous because I did not know what to expect. However, she quickly put me at ease. She told me what she thought was going on, explained the process for figuring it out, and then made sure I had all of her contact information. Once I had a diagnosis and started the process she was very upfront about everything. She explained things in terms I understood and addressed any and all issues I had. After my first failed cycle, she called me personally to tell my beta hCG results were negative and discussed next steps. Each appointment we had with her she was incredibly informative and discussed our chances of success and what to expect. I think one of Dr. Rodgers' strengths is her compassion. She herself has been through the gamut of fertility treatment and because of this, she totally understands where each and every patient is coming from. I feel like I am thoroughly cared for by Dr. Rodgers and honestly could not ask for a better doctor to have to go through this journey with.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Allison Rodgers?
Dr. Rodgers will give you a ton of information and tell you what she thinks is best for you, but she is also willing to discuss any research you may have discovered on your own. She definitely advocates for her patients and makes sure you are involved in your treatment plan. She generally answers questions you did not know you even had, but also make sure you ask the questions you do have.
Describe the protocols Allison Rodgers used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Our first cycle was a timed intercourse and Letrozole cycle. I took Letrozole on cycle days 5-9. The rationale behind this was the fact that I have PCOS and do not ovulate on my own. If I could ovulate, I could potentially get pregnant. Unfortunately, I began surging on my own with only a 14.5mm follicle so while I did the trigger shot, it did not produce a mature enough egg. I did not get pregnant this cycle. My second cycle we chose to do an injectable IUI cycle. The rationale behind this was that while I produced one follicle on Letrozole, it was not large enough. The injectables (Gonal-f) would hopefully produce a few mature follicles. Unfortunately, after 19 days of stimming, I had 10 follicles growing at the same rate. This cycle was cancelled. We finally opted for IVF. We used an antagonist protocol with Gonal-f, Menopur, and Ganirelix. I stimmed for eleven days. Days 1-4 I was on 200iu of Gonal-f. Days 5-10 I was on 150iu Gonal-f, 75iu Menopur and Ganirelix. Day 11 I was on 100iu Gonal-f, 75iu Menopur, and Ganirelix. Day 12 I triggered with 20iu of Lupron. Day 13 I had to add an hCG booster. On Day 14, I had 24 eggs retrieved, 16 of them were mature and 14 were ICSIed. We ended up with seven day 5 blastocysts and two day 6 blastocysts. This was a freeze all cycle as I have a rather high AMH and PCOS. In January we transferred one 2AA blastocyst and ended up getting pregnant. Unfortunately, this ended in a loss at 7w3d. I am currently prepping for a May FET.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Allison Rodgers.
We are extremely fortunate to have excellent insurance coverage. Once I hit my deductible, I was only responsible for 10% of the total cost of fertility care. Each time I meet with Dr. Rodgers personally I have a $40 co-pay. Other than that I just pay the lab and ultrasound costs. With that said, this treatment still has not been cheap, but it has been incredibly affordable because of my insurance.

The offices [FCI - Lindenhurst] are always PACKED! It is so hard to get a time that is needed as the offices are short staffed for all patients. The equipment is old and need to be updates as my technicians would sometimes have to shake the machines!... At the Highland Park office I once was not called back and communicated as to what medication I needed to take for the day. I had to call them after hours which is stressful.... I always felt like a number in the waiting room, at times I had to wait 45 minutes to 1 hour for my apt! Often time you cannot get an apt early in the morning for the people who have to get to work this is important!

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
This place is too busy! I always felt like a number in the waiting room, at times I had to wait 45 minutes to 1 hour for my apt! Often time you cannot get an apt early in the morning for the people who have to get to work this is important! They allow you to show up right when they open and then you wait and try to get in (which works sometimes). At the Lindenhurst office the staff would be stuck in traffic and you would be waiting on them to arrive. The waiting rooms are always full! The staff is overworked and the equipment is old. As they are all nice, I feel as though they were frustrated at times too as they were short staffed.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Jacobs always sat across from us at his desk with his leg up. He talked a lot and I felt like I interrupted him to ask him questions (not sure he liked that). Sometimes I felt like he was a bit cocky but I do believe that he knew his stuff. When he is finished talking to you, he calls in his nurse to handle the rest.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
The main nurse I had was amazing but left the office.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic
  • Provided conflicting information
How was your experience with Laurence A. Jacobs?
I do believe that Dr. Jacobs knows what he is doing but I did not have any success with him. I did 3 IUIs and 3 IVF cycles, one which was canceled due to my body not responding to the medication. My results for my IVF cycles were not very successful my first round I got 8 and only 1 made it. My second round got canceled days before retrial and my 3rd round I got 9 in which 3 made it. I did a frozen transfer and did not have success. I then did another round in which the nurse asked me, "Dr. Jacobs wants to know why we did not do a fresh transfer." I was appalled! Isn't this something the dr. should know!! He was the one who told me he believed in frozen transfers with better success rates. When I first arrived at this this office I was feeling very optimistic, over a year of treatment and no success, I left and went else where and am happy I did.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Laurence A. Jacobs?
Book your apts. early, he is hard to see!
Describe the protocols Laurence A. Jacobs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
3 IUIs with clomid- no success 3 IVF rounds- no success. Goal F, Lupron, Estrace, Menopur, Ganirelix
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
Cattle call for sure! The offices are always PACKED! It is so hard to get a time that is needed as the offices are short staffed for all patients. The equipment is old and need to be updates as my technicians would sometimes have to shake the machines!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Laurence A. Jacobs.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Rodgers is fabulous. She personally calls me during the treatment and meets with me to go through next steps. She listens to me and really tailors the treatment to me specifically.

How was your experience with Allison Rodgers?
Dr. Rodgers seems to know what she is talking about. She is very thorough when going over all the options. She is optimistic yet provides realistic expectations. She is very compassionate and seems to truly care about her patients. It would be nice to have a little more contact with her throughout the cycle, but the care from the nurse and clinic is top notch.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Allison Rodgers?
She is friendly and relatable.
Describe the protocols Allison Rodgers used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Cycle 1 we used letrozole, trigger shot and iui- this resulted in one mature follicle but ended in chemical pregnancy. Added estrogen part way through cycle and progesterone day 21. Cycle 2 letrozole trigger shot and iui. Began estrogen and progesterone earlier. Lining was thin so upped the dose of progesterone and estrogen. Ended in a negative. Cycle 3- getting ready to start this cycle. Letrozole with added metformin, and Gonal-f.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Allison Rodgers.
I am out of pocket so it was 275 per cycle and 274 per iui.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
He understood we wanted to try with our own eggs before moving onto donor and not only did he support that, he encouraged us. We did 3 IVF cycles and he always took my ideas (from my own research) seriously and was open minded to trying anything. Finally, he told me, "I am determined to make you pregnant" which made me feel like he had a vested interest in our success.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
Mostly fantastic. I talked with 3 different nurses regularly. Only once did I speak with one who was a bit rude and didn't answer my questions, but she was filling in for someone else that day.
How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
He is extremely personable and patient. He really listens to what you want, and doesn't just force his medical opinions on you. He doesn't seem concerned with his stats and is willing to take risks, if you as a patient want to try some out-of-the-box ideas. The only critique I have is that he is very busy and has many patients so he doesn't always explain every detail of the process, however he will answer any questions and if you forget to ask while there or think of your question later, the nursing staff will respond quickly.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Be very honest with him about how you feel and what you want. He will treat you like a human, not a statistic and although he will be blunt, he will give you hope when you may have lost all of it. He's a great balance of realistic and optimistic! Also, bring a list of questions to be sure you go over everything you're wondering about!
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
First IVF cycle was pretty standard since we didn't know how I would respond. We suppressed with BCP, and started with Menopur and Follistim. He upped the dosage of my follistim pretty high (I don't remember exact dosages anymore) because I turned out to be a slow responder. That cycle ended with 2 eggs, and one fertilized and was transferred. It was a 3 day fresh transfer and 6 cells at the time with minimal fragmentation. Unfortunately, the embryo did not stick and we ended up with a negative. Second cycle we decided (upon my request and his approval) to try estrogen priming. I only got 4 days into stimming when we learned I had one very large leading follicle and not much else. He had a safety concern for that one follicle getting too big so we cancelled that cycle and I was put on BCP to help shrink it back down. My 3rd cycle we were going to do a long Lupron protocol. I started priming with Lupron 2 weeks prior and ended up getting very sick from it. The doctor felt at that point the Lupron could still have benefited me even if it stopped, so we cut that off early and just moved onto stims (menopur and follistim). This time he kept my follistim at an average dosage but upped the menopur to 5 vials a day. He had me stim for 18 days to get the follicles mature. Although it was longer than most, I was monitored very carefully. We got 3 eggs at retrieval. One fertilized and we did another 3 day fresh transfer. This time our embryo was 10 cells with minimal fragmentation. I am now 26 weeks pregnant from that embryo with a healthy, strong baby girl!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
We had insurance coverage so I had very little out of pocket and whatever was out of pocket was explained thoroughly by the financial coordinator before cycles began. I don't remember my specific costs.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
IVF Florida is extremely organized, professional and knowledgeable about the latest research that is being done in the field of fertility. The nurses, who are the people that you talk with the most are very knowledgable as well and make you feel like you are important. I always felt very comfortable during a time in my life that was emotional beyond belief. As a new patient I would explain that you need to get comfortable with your nurse. The doctor is the one who is making all of the decisions and looking at your bloodwork and every test that is done, but for the daily contact about medications, ultrasounds, baseline appointments, etc...is your nurse. I was surprised at first that I wasn't always seeing the doctor and would often go in for bloodwork and ultrasounds with the techs; however this is the process and I knew that my doctor was always looking at the results of these in order to decide what the next steps are. Make sure that once you are given a nurse you always ask to talk to the same person when you call with questions. That way you are not having to re-explain yourself.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
When working with Dr. Feinberg I felt like a human because I felt that the treatment approach was extremely specific to our situation. She was always willing to have us come in for appointments to discuss the next steps in our process. I always felt that we had a plan.

How was your experience with Eve Feinberg?
Dr. Feinberg was an incredible doctor. She was extremely sensitive to our fertility situation and I really appreciated her realistic attitude. She did not get our hopes up with false promises, but was rather open with us about our situation and was always ready to come up with a new plan. She took alot of time in every appointment and never made us feel like she was in a rush to see other patients. We always felt that she was using the best procedures and technology and that she was always informed about the new research as fertility is changing and developing by the minute.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
My advice would be to not wait too long before going to see her.
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
When working with Dr. Feinberg we had already been thru several rounds of clomid, IUI with injectibles and IVF. We went to Dr. Feinberg already in the IVF process. During our first retreival cycle we used an antagonist protocol. I started taking follistim 75iu and 150 of menopur. I stimulated for approximately 12 days before preparing for the retrieval. I then took ganirelix. Dr. Feinberg was aggressive with my stimulation medications in order for us to get a good amount of eggs but she was very meticulous about not having me hyperstimulate which was a concern. She monitored me very closely. The second retrieval followed the same protocol.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eve Feinberg.
When doing PGS testing we typically spent about $6500 per testing. Our insurance covered 4 retrievals. During our surrogacy journey we were out of pocket and spent approximately $6000 on procedures.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Strengths: welcoming, compassionate, knowledgeable, comfortable Weaknesses: The first cycle can be tricky- if you don't ask questions they assume you know what's going on. Also, be aware of their payment process and policies. Talk to your nurse or the office manager about how much you might need to save and ways to find discounts.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Rodgers discussed diagnosis with us and always answered all of our questions; she called with every negative pregnancy test to discuss the next steps. The staff took great care to learn our names and ask us about our lives outside of treatments. And every nurse is understanding and responsive both over phone and email.

Dr. Rodgers always made us feel normal and excepted, and the compassion that she shows during every call helps us process the results. I prefer to focus on the next step and Dr. Rodgers helped us do that.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Allison Rodgers?
Ask every question you have, and don't be ashamed to ask.
Describe the protocols Allison Rodgers used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We've only done two cycles so far, both were the same. Letrozole and double IUI with estrogen support. During the first cycle, the letrozole (2.5 mg I believe) caused two great looking follicles to grow and the back to back IUI went perfectly. The estrogen support (Crinone) was added during the TWW. During the second cycle, the letrozole (same dosage) only caused one normal sized follicle, and Estrodiol, Crinone, and progesterone in oil (1mL) were all added during the TWW due to uterine lining not being think enough. For the third cycle, Dr. Rodgers doubled the dosage of the letrozole and we'll see if that helped the follicle size and count.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Allison Rodgers.
Treatments are expensive but I was lucky my insurance covered most of it, and now covers all of it after I hit my deductible. For reference, my deductible was just over 3000 and we hit that with a cycle and a half.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Feinberg and her staff, including nurses and front desk staff, always knew my name, my cycle details, my history, and most importantly were extremely understanding and caring about our great desire to have a child. After an unsuccessful attempt at IVF with 0 embryos to transfer with another practice where I had been treated like a number, Dr. Feinberg reviewed my 300+ page medical record and explained why and how IVF with her protocol would work. After the heartbreak of going through the process to not even have a transfer, it took everything in me to be strong enough to try again. Dr. Feinberg and her staff didn't let me down and I felt supported and encouraged the whole way through.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Dr. Feinberg's nursing staff is excellent. They communicated well, were always available for questions, and always returned my calls same-day, or next-day if I left a message later in the day. I really felt like they were all in my corner; I don't know how they do that for all of their patients, because the care seems so individual. I had a great rapport with everyone there and enjoyed seeing them and moving through the process with them. They made it easy to stay positive which can be so very hard during fertility treatment.
How was your experience with Eve Feinberg?
Dr. Feinberg is a joy to work with and takes her work of creating families very seriously. She understands the many difficult paths that lead individuals or couples to require ART and truly listens when you talk about your experience. I always felt that I had enough time when speaking with her and that while explaining treatment options, she considered our wants and needs carefully. I honestly cannot say enough positive things about her.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
My best advice would be that if you haven't yet tried IVF, be prepared to hear that you need to move to IVF. I had so hoped that a lesser treatment would work for us, but after hearing the success rates and understanding that Clomid, IUI, etc. have much lower rates of success, it was Dr. Feinberg who really got me to take IVF seriously and to move on from repeated stressful cycles with negative outcomes.
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I have PCOS and am anovulatory; haven't had a period on my own since I was 16. I am now 35. I tried 6 Clomid cycles through my OBGYN, with no pregnancies, and moved on to Dr. Feinberg to try a Clomid cycle with IUI. It was negative as well. Dr. Feinberg suggested IVF due to the much higher success rate. I also had a possibly blocked tube, discovered during an HSG. Because I was 100% covered through employer insurance at a different practice, I left Dr. Feinberg and tried IVF there. (Huge mistake.) It ended with an egg retrieval that resulted in OHSS, maybe 16 eggs retrieved, 5 embryos, and 0 embryos made it to day 3. We were devastated and I was very sick with OHSS. There was 0 follow up from that doctor. Almost a year later, I went back to Dr. Feinberg, and she read over my 300+ page medical record from the previous IVF attempt. She showed me 3 places where she would have canceled the cycle. She said, this cycle was never going to result in a pregnancy. The eggs were not mature/large enough and my hormones weren't at the right levels (my estrogen was well over 6000 when I developed OHSS). She told me I had a 90% chance of getting pregnant, with a longer, slower protocol, and that we would do a freeze-all to allow my body some time to rest before transfer, due to having OHSS. The difference in the cycles cannot be overstated. What was so painful and difficult the first time was made easy and understandable with Dr. Feinberg and her staff. I again used injectables including Lupron and Follistim, and progesterone in oil. I was so calm about/before the egg retrieval this time, I tried to take a cab home (not allowed after anesthesia.) I did not develop OHSS, we retrieved 23 mature eggs, ICSI produced 6 viable embryos, and we froze them all. About a month later we transferred 1 AA embryo that resulted in a pregnancy and live birth; my son is now 1 year old.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eve Feinberg.
My costs were covered by insurance; I had to meet the deductible and embryo storage is out of pocket.

Honest, intelligent and is very clear what the chances are. Takes results of prior inseminations to explain how and why she is taking certain courses of action each time. Compassionate and patient, fully aware of the emotional burden this takes on you personally, physically as well your family.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
She is very progressive and willing to think " out of the box" to find a way to make your dream come true. She is not unrealistic but very open to new ideas. I was a single, heterosexual woman that was 40 and not married. I never felt different with her or that she was judging despite my own concern about choices I was making.
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I don't remember the protocols but I chose to try IUI the 6th time, she would have allowed me to go to IVF earlier. My insurance covered 4 egg retrievals per year and after the first IVF, I began to discuss donor eggs. I was 42 at this time and would be 43, if the next 3 did not work, before I could begin again. Dr. Feinberg believed, despite my lower egg count/low egg retrieval but positive response to treatment, my chances were good using my own eggs. She recommended attempting one more cycle and I ended up with a healthy baby boy.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eve Feinberg.
My insurance covered a large portion of the care. An office visit was only charged if you actually met with Dr. Feinberg, in her office. If she stopped in for the ultrasound or briefly 'touched base', she did not charge.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Upstairs staff was exceptional. Downstairs transfer staff was a notch below. I think there is a little bit more stress in the retrieval and transfer office, thisnits not as light hearted.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Office staff and Dr. Marut loved seeing us. They genuinely seemed to like the challenge ahead of us and were excited to help.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
Exceptional, first name basis. More bedside manor than Dr., but that was a perfect combo for us.
How was your experience with Edward Marut?
He was phenomenal along with his staff. We had setbacks in chemical pregnancy, miscarriage, and high risk twins. He was very cut and dry about what to expect, why things happen, etc. wasn't codling, very analytical and straight forward which is in line with our mentality.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
He's very good at what he does. Trust in him and be happy you have a chance to do IVF with him. While the process is very emotional, he'll likely give you the best shot. We went into the office as the only ones smiling and keeping it light hearted. I think the staff and him fed off that and treated us like royalty when we were in there. We were on a first name basis with everyone there, get to know the nurses, blood takers, etc. and ask your spouse to go with you as much as they can. We imagine this would be hard to do alone, but we're fortunate each could go to all appointments.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
We hadn't phenomenal insurance so it was less than $1000. $500 storage a year for eggs.

Laura [nurse at FCI] was very personable, and responded quickly to any questions I had. There were a couple of incidents of not fully explaining timing of things, or giving me all of the items needed, which involved a lot of stressful running around....The phlebotomist was incredibly friendly and compassionate, which is nice when you have blood draws every couple of days. The office staff was pleasant, if distant. One of the ultrasound techs did not use any kind of lubricant on the wand, which made for very unpleasant ultrasounds.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Feinberg was pleasant and personable, but she was only involved in a handful of visits, which made me feel a bit like I was just a file being delegated to someone else.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Laura was very personable, and responded quickly to any questions I had. There were a couple of incidents of not fully explaining timing of things, or giving me all of the items needed, which involved a lot of stressful running around.
How was your experience with Eve Feinberg?
Dr. Feinberg was very pleasant and answered any questions I had. I would have liked to have seen her a bit more often during the course of my diagnosis and treatment.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
Come with lots of questions, she will answer them.
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I did one cycle of fertility drug shots coupled with timed intercourse and IUI. There were ultrasounds every couple of days to monitor follicle development and when to inject to trigger ovulation. We did injections with timed and IUI to give the highest chances of getting pregnant, which worked, as I did one cycle with the clinic and got pregnant.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eve Feinberg.
For the IUI and drugs, it all totaled being close to $4000. Our insurance covered nothing, and we had to pay out of pocket for every single thing. Prices were given ahead of time, and they had a 5% discount when paying without insurance.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Very organized, but seemed to run behind a lot (normal, I know), however, I feel like FCI in general is only concerned with their success rates, if something will hurt their rating they won't try it.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
There was no willingness to work with me, I was told that my only option was egg donor ivf, she would not even try any other route first to see if I could respond to it. They were only concerned with the highest change of conceiving (which I appreciate) but I would have liked to try other avenues first. I do not want to use donor eggs.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
She always responded right away when I would email/call with questions.
How was your experience with Eve Feinberg?
Dr. Feinberg was a good doctor, I only saw her for a few months, as I did not agree with the only treatment plan she proposed for me. At times I did not really understand what she was talking about, was far too emotional to really comprehend (my own fault)
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
Be your own advocate, push for what you want, and if they can not give you that, then find someone who will.
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
After running a few tests, she would only consider doing donor egg ivf, even though I told her I did not want to do that. I wanted to try other things first, but they did not have a good % outcome, so the would not do them.

How was your experience with Eve Feinberg?
Dr. Feinberg was very kind, explaining the egg vitrification process and expectations to me. I am a medical professional so she was able to be a little more technical with me, but was still thorough. I was sad that she left the practice.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
Encourage him /her to ask as many questions as you can think of while you have her undivided attention
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Used menopur / Gonal F low dose and HCG as trigger. Had a lot of bloating and pain that began about 12 hours after my retrieval procedure. Initial US showed 17 follicles at very first exam, about 14 follicles around the time that I actually began my injections, 12 eggs harvested, 10 frozen.

I had many set backs and she knew it was going to be hard to tell me. She took the time to call me and understood when I was upset.
How was your experience with Laurence A. Jacobs?
My experience with Dr. Jacobs was a success. It was such a success that my husband and I have chosen to go back to him for our second child. Dr. Jacobs has a kind heart. He listens. He has seen it all. He understands that we all want to have a child as soon as possible, but takes the time to explain each and every step, and his reasoning. I would highly recommend him.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I love Dr. Jacobs and especially the nurses at the clinic. Dr. Jacobs is very warm. When I went in to discuss trying for #2, the first thing he wanted to do was see a picture of baby #1. He walked me through the process, and took time to answer all of my questions. He also took me seriously when I felt something was wrong, when my regular OB/Gyn did not (he ran tests and diagnosed me with PCOS)
Describe your experience with your nurse.

How was your experience with Laurence A. Jacobs?
Dr. Jacobs is extremely knowledgable. He's always up on the latest research and shares the information with his patients. I always feel well informed and understand why we are taking the recommended steps. The only issue is to be prepared to wait when you go. Because he takes time with each person there can be a wait to see him. I never feel rushed when I'm in with him though.

At a clinic as large as FCI, certain things are bound to be lost in the shuffle. With that being said, Dr. Feinberg did the best possible job she could do to have everything run smoothly. The nurses were also very good for the most part. The issues were more administrative or when something needed to be done by someone outside of my "team".

[FCI Nurse] Michelle was incredible. She was compassionate but full of information. Michelle showed me such kindness through the whole process, and now that we are considering it again I know she will be just as helpful and compassionate...It was 11,500 for the total IVF procedure, plus the cost of medicine. I also had the cost of the initial consult with the doctor, the HSG cost, and all 3 IUI's, but I don't recall the cost of each of these items.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Having access to a satellite office was rather helpful since it wasn't always easy to get into the city of Chicago for appointments. This clinic works like a well oiled machine, yet they show compassion, understanding and kindness to patients.

Michelle was incredible. She was compassionate but full of information. Michelle showed me such kindness through the whole process, and now that we are considering it again I know she will be just as helpful and compassionate.
How was your experience with Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
Dr. Hirshfeld-Cytron was helpful during the IVF process. We didn't see her very often so I formed more of a relationship with the nurses and ultrasound tech, but she made herself available whenever needed.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
Have patience.
Describe the protocols Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron used in your cycles and their degree of success.
In order to even begin myself and my husband were required to have bloodwork done. My husband also had a sperm analysis and I had a HSG. All of which came back clear. From there we went on to try 3 medicated IUI's and finally we went through an IVF cycle. We transferred two embryo's during that cycle and were successful in becoming pregnant with our son Blake, but at 19 weeks I went into pre-term labor we lost our dear son.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron.
It was 11,500 for the total IVF procedure, plus the cost of medicine. I also had the cost of the initial consult with the doctor, the HSG cost, and all 3 IUI's, but I don't recall the cost of each of these items.

Had a good experience with her. She answered all of my questions in a professional yet honest manner and worked with my ideal timeline to get the retrieval completed before the end of the year (and I'd have new insurance that potentially wouldn't help cover the costs).

She was a busy lady but always made time for me when I needed her. She knew my name, what my husband did for work, and seemed to genuinely care about my concerns.
How was your experience with Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
She was a busy physician but very competent and always made time for her patients. I wish she would've explained my diagnosis more with me but she was always willing and able to answer questions. She was extremely smart. Very researched based and did her homework. She was aggressive with treatment (in a good way) and just wanted me to get pregnant.

[Nurse at FCI] Agnes called me with test results and always responded to my emails in a timely fashion if I emailed her with lower-priority questions. It was obvious to me that she works with a lot of patients because she would not remember specific details about my past with the practice, such as whether or not I had IUIs prior to IVF, etc. The more time I spent with the practice, the more familiar I felt she was with me. When other nurses subbed in for Agnes or when I was monitored over the weekend at a different office, I found that other nurses often gave me more information as far as specific numbers; sometimes I would have to ask for exact values rather than just hearing from her that they were "good" or "normal" or "a little low."

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
FCI has a state of the art IVF clinic that's one of the biggest and best in the area, which I consider a good thing for IVF because you want experience on your side when it comes to embryologists and doctors. One thing to keep in mind is that the chances are small that your doctor will perform one or more of your procedures. Nurses perform IUIs and the doctors rotate for retrievals and transfers. I had 4 different doctors (one was my own doctor) for the 2 retrievals and 2 transfers I did and you will be meeting those doctors on the day of the procedure just a few minutes before. Being monitored at one of the smaller suburban satellite offices provided a more intimate experience than the main hub in River North, which is higher volume.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
FCI is a very large organization, but I primarily went to a suburban satellite office that was small in size. There was always the same receptionist, same billing person, my doctor and three nurses. 90% of the time, it was my primary nurse who called with my results. It was only on weekends for monitoring for my two IUIs and IVF cycles that I felt more like a number when I had to go to their central River North location. The waiting rooms are full and several women are herded in many at a time for ultrasounds and blood draws. During IVF procedures, however, the experience was very intimate and we did not feel like a number at all.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Agnes called me with test results and always responded to my emails in a timely fashion if I emailed her with lower-priority questions. It was obvious to me that she works with a lot of patients because she would not remember specific details about my past with the practice, such as whether or not I had IUIs prior to IVF, etc. The more time I spent with the practice, the more familiar I felt she was with me. How was your experience with Christopher Sipe?
Dr. Sipe has a very sympathetic and kind disposition. He helped my husband and I keep a sense of humor throughout this process, which really resonated with us. He was also very upfront about the risks of multiples and advised against multiple embryo transfers in our particular situation. He took great care to explain our test results and treatments. We met with him at our first initial consult, a follow-up consult to begin IUI treatment, a consult to begin IVF treatment and then a review of our first IVF cycle, which failed, to talk about what he would change for the second cycle. He also did perform my embryo retrieval. 3 different other doctors performed my first transfer, second retrieval and second transfer--doctors in the practice rotate for those procedures and you work with whomever is on duty that day. Dr. Sipe is just the right combination of frank and empathetic.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Christopher Sipe?
Do your own research and ask questions! The more you show that you know about the process, the better conversations you can have. Also, there are no dumb questions. Dr. Sipe can break down anything for you and make it more understandable.
Describe the protocols Christopher Sipe used in your cycles and their degree of success.
For the first IVF cycle, we did the standard protocol for an unexplained diagnosis: One month birth control, Lupron for suppression, followed by Follistim and Menopur. We retrieved 11 eggs, 8 of which were mature and 4 fertilized. 3 made it to Day 3, he recommended we transfer 2 10-cell embryos and the third leftover made it to blastocyst and was frozen. At our IVF post-mortem, Dr. Sipe told us that I didn't respond as well as hoped to this protocol and that my follicles grew in a wide spread of sizes. His goal with the second cycle would be to change the protocol with the goal of creating more eggs that are closer in size. The second cycle protocol was three days of Ganirelix only for suppression, followed by higher doses of Follistim and Menopur, then Ganirelix introduced again prior to retrieval. The second cycle retrieved 11 eggs, all 11 were mature, 8 fertilized and 6 made it to blastocyst stage on Day 5. We transferred one single embryo on Day 5 and have just received two positive betas with hope for a successful pregnancy. We have 1 embryo frozen from the first cycle and 5 from the second cycle for future attempts. Though we did not meet the goal of creating MORE eggs the second cycle, it was far and away a better cycle with better results, and my follicles grew close in size with the second protocol. It was obvious throughout the whole cycle that my body responded better. I was also more relaxed because I knew what to expect.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Christopher Sipe.
We have insurance coverage for infertility after meeting our $5,000 deductible. Items not covered by our insurance included backup sperm freeze for IVF ($500) and embryo freezing ($1200 up front plus additional yearly cost, about $500)

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Strengths are the high success rates, open 7 days a week so you're closely monitored and each office is a well oiled machine.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I have a unique medical history and feel like she took that into consideration. She monitors you thru the weekends so that another doctor isn't dictating care without knowing you. She calls throughout the cycle to let you know what's she's thinking about it.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Sometimes doesn't have time to explain things or appears rushed/frustrated. But have not had any issues with timely communication, results, medication orders, etc.
How was your experience with Meike Uhler?
She seems to be an experienced and seasoned RE. she can come off as stoic, but that is also a good thing; She does a good job of not instilling false hope. I feel like she is a good communicator and explains things well. She practices at two 'satellite' locations with FCI which tend to not be a monotonous as the main river north location. I think this helps with a reasonable patient load in turn giving you an individualized experience and not one of "a number."
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Meike Uhler?
She will not give you false hope. She will tell you what she thinks based on research and her experience. She can come off as blunt but good clinicians are transparent.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
When we requested her attention she was there for us. The clinic as a whole has a lot of volume so it's easy to feel like a number and there's only so much the doctors and nurses can do to make you feel different. Amber, our nurse, worked very hard to communicate with us and she was lovely. We spoke to Dr. Rodgers about 2-3 times over a 5 month period. Again, once we requested to speak with her she was accommodating. My husband and I decided that although we feel like it's a cattle call at times, if it works, then GREAT! We are still in treatment.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Amber works very hard to make a connection with her patients. She makes herself available after hours for calls and emails with patients in case you have any questions. She definitely made up for the lack or warm and fuzzies we got from the doctor.
How was your experience with Allison Rodgers?
Dr. Rodgers is full of energy and makes you feel comfortable right away. We liked her right away because she was so confident that she could help us. Because she has a lot of patients, it's hard at times to keep her full attention. This is the case from our first consultation throughout the next 3-4 months. When we requested phone calls, she was cooperative but we had to spend the first part of the call reminding her of our journey thus far. I think she did the best she could but she just has to handle a lot of volume. Her nurse Amber is her other half and while I adore Amber, there's only so much she can do with approximately 200 patients. My biggest frustration is the lack of follow up or communication. Their offices closed at 4pm or earlier on a regular basis and it was hard to get ahold of people to ask questions or to review your medications.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Allison Rodgers?
Have phone discussions with Dr. Rodgers on a regular basis. Her nurses are great, but it's nice to review next steps with the doctor and understand why she's prescribing what she is.

FCI is a large clinic, but Dr Rodgers and Amber give such personal attention... Amber is excellent. She has been an FCI patient herself, so she gets it. She is patient and prompt when responding to questions.... After previous attempts with Birth control/Antagonist and estrogen priming/microdose lupron failed, we did an estrogen primed and antagonist protocol with max stims. It was exactly what we needed. After getting only 2 eggs at my previous clinic, we were able to get 12 eggs (8 mature) and 2 embryos to day 5. Unfortunately it didn't work, but this was by far the furthest we had ever gotten.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
FCI is a large clinic, but Dr Rodgers and Amber give such personal attention. I had Dr. Marut for both my retrieval and transfer, and I really liked him as well. Overall I was very impressed with the facilities and everyone I have met there.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Rodgers is very compassionate, yet honest and straight forward. You can tell she gets it since she has gone through it. She called multiple times through my cycle to let me know she was watching things closely and called personally with my negative result. She also spent as long as we needed (over an hour) talking about options for next steps.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Amber is excellent. She has been an FCI patient herself, so she gets it. She is patient and prompt when responding to questions.
How was your experience with Allison Rodgers?
After a cancelled IVF and a failed IVF at another clinic, I was losing hope when I came to Dr Rodgers. She gave me hope, but also acknowledged our odds and that it wouldn't be easy. I was glad she was willing to give it her all on a hard case. I thought she was very up to date on all the latest research and took time to answer all my questions. I have a direct email for any questions, and she made sure to call multiple times throughout the cycle to check in since she wasn't scheduled the day of my retrieval or transfer. Even after a failure, I know she will help me have a child with either my eggs or donor.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Allison Rodgers?
She is great. After seeing 2 other doctors, and having consults with 2 more, I finally found the right fit with Dr. Rodgers. Schedule a consult with her, you won't regret it. I was worried about feeling like a number in a large clinic, but Dr. Rodgers and her nurse make it feel like a small clinic experience.
Describe the protocols Allison Rodgers used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Allison Rodgers.
I have insurance that covers infertility up to a life time max after hitting a deductible and OOP max

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Small but personal. The staff is fantastic.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I had been to THREE other fertility doctors, including CCRM in Colorado, and came back to FCI in Chicago for one last try. She referred me to the best donor she had ever seen and I am currently pregnant with a baby girl due in 2016. She was present and caring throughout each step of the process. Her office staff is second to NONE!
Describe your experience with your nurse.
All of Dr. Feinberg's staff at the Hoffman Estates office are the best! They know your name and make you feel important! They actually care and this is hugely important when you are going through this process!
How was your experience with Eve Feinberg?
Dr. Feinberg is professional and caring. I cannot say enough about how she helped me through recovering from 3.5 years and 6 previous IVF treatments when I was about to give up entirely. She was confident that this would work and helped me stay calm and confident as well!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eve Feinberg?
Don't hesitate -- go to see her. She will be honest and tell you if something is likely to work or not, which I think is important given the cost of fertility treatments.
Describe the protocols Eve Feinberg used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I had just experienced my second of 2 donor cycle losses. The first was a chemical pregnancy and the second was a 13 week miscarriage with a Down's syndrome fetus. I was devastated as I had just come from CCRM in Colorado. I had experienced a total of 6 cycles of IVF and was desperate to find a solution to my problem. We had talked about doing PGS on my own eggs/embryos with a new fresh retrieval versus another donor egg. An amazing donor that Dr. Feinberg had worked then became available, and she called me right away to let me know this was my best option!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eve Feinberg.
I paid approximately 25K for my entire donor cycle. I felt that given this donor had a fantastic track record it was cheap compared to other places I had visited (CCRM - 42K per donor cycle with no baby and no guarantee program).

Overall, the clinic [FCI] is efficient, organized, and friendly. I visited the Buffalo Grove location for my weekly monitoring. The phlebotomist and ultrasound tech are super nice and explain things as you need if you speak up about concerns or questions. The receptionists at the location are hit or miss. Some seem like they would rather be working elsewhere, some are obviously new and uninformed, and some are magical. However, there are some very specific issues. The aParent IVF financial coordinator, Cindy Tracy, is an absolute nightmare to work with. If you are required to do PGD testing, your default lab is with Reprogenetics. They contract directly with Global Genetics (the genetics team within aParent) so Global Genetics hikes up their rates to make a substantial profit. My first year with them, I just said yes and opened my check book. The second year, after reluctantly returning post-miscarriage, I wanted to speak with Cindy directly to see if there was any wiggle room in pricing since I was a return patient, second year veteran, etc. Email after email, phone call after phone call...nothing was ever returned. She only responded if I copied Dr. Jacobs...which was my last resort. Dr. Jacobs started contracting with a second lab, and it put Cindy's team in a bind since they couldn't price gouge anymore. The second lab bills the patient directly so there are no hidden fees. Without haggling anything I am saving four weeks of set-up time and $3,000. aParent IVF, Global Genetics, and CryoVault do not contract with insurances and are not recognized with NPI numbers. You will not be reimbursed for anything, even if your specific situation is medically necessary. An explanation regarding this type of information would have been extremely necessary when trying to budget for the year. One more suggestion to the financial team at aParent. FCI is willing to bill the biopsy portion for their patients, and should advocate to do so. This fee is $2,000 each retrieval and IS covered with insurance if the clinic makes the request. It is so much harder getting a claim reimbursed, if at all, when the patient pays out of pocket. Why do we have insurance if the clinic won't help?

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
With Dr. Jacbos himself, and his nurse, Cindy, I was treated like a human. I was responded to quickly and my protocol was specific to our situation. I was able to have back and forth dialogue and conversations that were positive and hopeful.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Cindy is amazing. Hands down the best communicator. I probably emailed her a dozen times a week and never got a response any later than a couple hours. She will not, however, answer the phone. Email is best. And I am more comfortable putting everything in writing so I can look back as needed. I have actually never met her face to face but I don't care. She is fabulous.
How was your experience with Laurence A. Jacobs?
Dr. Jacobs is a warm and friendly for a doctor. He jokes while providing specific information. I research a lot of things and he tends to answer my questions before I have a chance to ask. When I miscarried, he adjusted his schedule to have an emergency conversation and follow-up as it was unexpected. We are sticking with him for our second year (and 4th egg retrieval) as I expect better results this round vs another clinic.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Laurence A. Jacobs?
Dr. Jacobs will advocate for you if there is an issue with insurance denials or if you cannot reach your nurse. I would not go to him directly unless it's a protocol question that was missed in your meetings with him. His assigned nurse should be the first point of contact. We had go through PGD and PGS testing after he suggested we both have carrier testing done prior to our first IUI. This would be information "just to have in our back pocket." Well, turns out we both carried the same genetic mutation, which resulted in us by-passing IUI and jumping straight into IVF to do everything in our power to avoid having a baby with our mutation. He potentially saved us a lifetime of hospital visits or an extremely early funeral for our baby.
Describe the protocols Laurence A. Jacobs used in your cycles and their degree of success.
After my initial baseline, the results yielded less than optimal amh, fsh, and ovarian reserve levels. I was bumped to the highest follicle stimulating hormone regime, with the antagonist protocol. My resting follicle count was 8. I stimmed for just over a week and produced 6 eggs at retrieval. Of those 6, none made it to blastocyst. The second round, he added Letrozole to the mix and by that point I had been taking myo-inositol and coq10 for a couple months (at Dr. Jacobs suggestion). We did the same antagonist protocol, this time yielding 7 eggs retrieved. One made it to Day-5 Blastocyst and was biopsied and frozen for PGD/PGS testing. Discouraged, we met with him to discuss our blast numbers. He told me he would try a less-common protocol, called micro-dose lupron, but warned me I may see poorer results, and if my hormone levels got out of whack too quickly or my response was even lower, he would cancel before retrieval so my insurance wouldn't recognize a 3rd retrieval. We would then have to resort back to the antagonist. My third retrieval with the MDL protocol yielded 16 eggs at retrieval, and 4 made it to Day-5 Blastocyst and were biopsied. Of the total 5 biopsied embryos, 2 were genetically normal with PGD/PGS. We did two transfers. The first one did not take, negative beta. I had an endo scratch prior to my second transfer. The second transfer resulted in a positive pregnancy. Unfortunately, that pregnancy ended when I miscarried at 10w3d. At this point, I am cycling again with the MDL protocol in the hopes that trying again will yield a take-home baby as it is clear I can get pregnant.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Laurence A. Jacobs.
I bought my own individual insurance through BCBSIL. Illinois has infertility coverage mandates. My yearly premium is $4,560. My deductible and max out of pocket is $6,500. Medications not covered with insurance is $150. PGD/PGS testing is $4,985. Freezing is $1,200 for the first round, $800 for the second. In 2016 I paid $14,800 for three retrievals, two transfers, and genetic testing (not including insurance monthly premiums). In 2017 I plan to pay $12,835 for one round, and another couple thousand for additional rounds.

She was easy to communicate with and was very thorough with instructions and results....Dr Nani was a very optimistic and charismatic Doctor. Throughout our treatments she was our biggest supporter. Dr Nani is an extremely positive and personable Doctor. She is your biggest supporter in your treatments. I never felt that I would not be able to get pregnant. She knows her stuff and treats you like a person with feelings.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jane Nani?
Nothing, she covers everything. She makes it as pleasurable as she can. She will make you feel that getting pregnant is easy when that is not always the case.
Describe the protocols Jane Nani used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We started with pills which did not work due to my pcos. After the pills, we switched to injectables. The first round went well and we made it to an iui, but did not get pregnant. The next round of injectables I ended up with 8 eggs so we decided to cancel the iui. If we had insurance, we could had converted to ivf. We did another round of injectables and iui with no pregnancy. The last round we started with idea of converting to ivf of neede, as we went a little more aggressive with meds. We made it to an iui and we got pregnant!

My understanding is that FCI is the third largest infertility practice in the country. This means there are a LOT of patients in the waiting room (especially at the River North Clinic) and you may feel like a number. Do not let this alarm you! There are numerous benefits of being at a large practice. Their SART numbers are fantastic. They have a lot of experience dealing with a variety of diagnoses (male infertility factor, low AMH, etc.). They have many experienced phlebotomists and ultra sound technicians and do their best to move through patients as quickly as possible. If you can, try to get a doctor who does IVF procedures at the River North Clinic (as opposed to the Highland Park Clinic), because patients at River North can do retrievals and transfers based on their own cycle unlike patients at the Highland Park Clinic who have to cycle up when FCI has time at the clinic. Tip: If you're doing monitoring out of the River North Clinic, try to make your appointments around 9:15AM -- you miss the 1st morning rush and come in before the 2nd morning rush.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
FCI is a large practice and you will feel like a number when you go in for blood work and ultra sounds, but Dr. Sipe makes every effort to engage with you when you go in for consults. He is kind and comforting during what is an extremely stressful process. You don't get a lot of time with him. Frankly, I only saw him when I was in for a consult. Over a year, I believe we had 5 consults, but I was okay with that. His job was to get me pregnant and to oversee my treatment not to hold my hand for every step of the way.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Meghan is an incredibly sympathetic and kind nurse. She always answered my questions and promptly responded to my phone calls and e-mails.
How was your experience with Christopher Sipe?
Dr. Sipe is an excellent clinician. He was sympathetic, comforting, and compassionate. Most importantly, he is kind. He took the time to walk through our diagnosis and recent test results. He answered all of our questions (many before we even asked them).
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Christopher Sipe?
You are your own best advocate. My advice is to go in prepared with a list of questions. Chances are Dr. Sipe will answer them without you having to ask them, but it's good to have them handy. Time with an FCI doctor is precious so use it to your advantage and ask as many questions as you want/need to. Dr. Sipe will never make you feel rushed and he will always walk through each step of your treatment. If you need him to repeat himself, he will.
Describe the protocols Christopher Sipe used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We transferred from another practice in a different state. Dr. Sipe was recommended to us by a friend who works in infertility (i.e., he is an embryologist in a different state and reached out to his network to get us a referral). Because we participate in a health insurance plan (Aetna) that follows the Illinois mandate, we were required to do 6 cycles of Clomid with IUI before we could get cleared to do IVF. After the first 3 failed cycles, Dr. Sipe wanted us to move to IVF but we had to do 3 more cycles before we could get approved. He expressed sympathy and frustration at the needless bureaucracy. After getting cleared for IVF, we did the long Lupron protocol and did a fresh embryo transfer, which worked! We are now pregnant and have several embryos that we were able to freeze.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Christopher Sipe.
Treatment covered by insurance -- we paid copays and coinsurance.

We had to do 6 IUIs before insurance would pay for IVF...then the office [FCI] found a polyp in my uterus (why hadn't they looked for or found this before you may ask? I have no idea -- and was pretty pissed when I found out too!...since we were told that IUI success rates usually improve after polyp removal)...It's just huge and impersonal. Majority of the staff is very nice and compassionate, but then I've had a number of interactions with snippy staff who clearly don't want to be there. Less of that in the suburban locations when I was there for either lab/ultrasound monitoring or the IVF procedures.

Kaplan is kind and thorough. He will listen to and answer your questions, but there's not a lot of discussion regarding what to do going forward. He will tell you his plan and if you're not comfortable with that or any of the particular details then you can choose to do something else, but he doesn't really go through your options with you so you need to come in prepared. I'm in healthcare so I have a number of resources at my disposal to be able to research various protocols and procedures before and during our time with Kaplan, but I'm not sure what someone with no experience or baseline knowledge of this side of healthcare would do.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Friendly but very busy.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
He is fine -- appropriately kind, but you feel like one of many, many patients. Especially at the River North location. You only see him for the initial consult and then once your already loopy on diazepam right before the embryo transfer -- or not at all for IUIs since those are done by either nurses or technicians.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Do your research and come to the consultation with all of your questions because that will probably be the only time you'll have to ask them.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
7 IUIs: first with just Ovidrel, second and third with Clomid and Ovidrel, fourth and fifth with Follistem, Ovidrel and Endometrin, sixth with just Ovidrel (we had to do 6 IUIs before insurance would pay for IVF), then the office found a polyp in my uterus (why hadn't they looked for or found this before you may ask? I have no idea -- and was pretty pissed when I found out too!), and then the seventh after polyp removal (since we were told that IUI success rates usually improve after polyp removal) with just Ovidrel (since at this point we really didn't think it would work and Follistem cost us $1500). IVF: Egg retrieval protocol -- (I don't remember specifics here; definitely lots of Follistem but we switched insurance providers so that was ok). Frozen Embryo Transfer -- OCP, leuprolide, Minivelle patches, baby ASA, prgesterone (IM injections and Endometrin), doxy and Medrol the 5 days right before transfer, diazepam at transfer, then continue both progrestones, patches, and ASA until (yet another negative) pregnancy test.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
IUI: <$1000 IVF: $10k for the procedure + $5K for the medications (without insurance) FET: $3k for the procedure + $3k for the medications (without insurance) A note about medications: There are a LOT of things to know about your fertility medications. First, make sure you know where you can go to get all of your fertility medications. Most insurance dictates where you have to go but you may still have some options within their rules. If you don't like the staff, if they are not helpful, if they don't send you all the necessary syringes, needles, alcohol swabs, Sharps container (usually for FREE since you're a "fertility patient") then just go somewhere else. This is such a stressful time and having to deal with pharmacy staff (including both technicians and pharmacists) who don't understand the process, or have compassion for your situation, then you should find one that does. Next, crazy high co-pays and "not covered" medications are not the end of the story! There are a number of co-pay assistant cards available from the manufacturer that will help you bring the copay down (sometimes WAY down). Go on the website for each of your medications, get the codes (you may have to register with that pharma company), and then give them to your pharmacy. And no, you do not have to give the card to them in person -- they only need the numbers (ID #, group #, Bin #, etc.) so if the person you are speaking with doesn't seem to know how to handle the info/card, just ask to speak with someone who does. Also, sometimes the cash price for a medication may actually be less expensive than the copay from your insurance so make sure you ask about that too. Next, if you are told that something is not covered by your insurance (i.e. a prior authorization doesn't go through), you can submit an appeal. This can happen when the medication prescribed in your protocol is not part of what your insurance company has on their protocol. This happened to me with Lupron since it is not FDA-approved for fertility. Here's where your specialty pharmacy comes in -- they can submit studies to your insurance company showing the safety and efficacy of that drug when used for the indication in which you are planning to use it. You are probably not the first patient to need this so many pharmacies already have this information ready to go. My appeal was accepted and the $200 cash price went down to a $5 copay :) Finally, make sure you utilize your Health Savings Account or Flexible Savings Account. We put the maximum amount in at that beginning of the year (about $2500) and we just use that for all of the meds.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Originally, the strength was the ability to get in easily so FCI is enormous and they have a big staff. However, my our last appointment (when we were waiting to find out if i miscarried) we had to wait two hours because it was so overcrowded after being closed for the Memorial Day Weekend because they have so many patients. In the end, we felt more like a number than anything else.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I felt like the steps we were taking to get pregnant despite unexplained infertility were not specific to my cycles and rather a generic approach.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I was unhappy with the nurses and was a big part of the reason I wanted to leave FCI and go to a smaller clinic. There were times they would call and read me instructions and have them incorrect.

How was your experience with Edward Marut?
Dr Marut was very nice so initially we really liked him. However, as time went on I didn't feel like he was consistent in his approach and I felt like he didn't present us with all of the facts. Months after the fact I read stuff on my chart (as I was transitioning to a new doctor) that was never mentioned to me. Additionally, there was one cycle where he proceed with an IUI while I still had my period. As we got a second and third opinion, who both questioned his approach that month it made us think he wasn't giving us individualized treatment and instead just going through the motions.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
We were only able to meet with him a few times during our treatment. Be ready with your questions because he is not forthcoming with information so I felt like our meetings were rushed and I didn't leave feeling confident. Given what I know now, I would come in with a list of questions to make sure everything was addressed during the quick time with him.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
After getting the Fertility Awareness Test at FCI ($99), we learned my husband's sperm was normal by all 3 counts and I had plenty of eggs (with a strong AMH score). We had previously miscarried (natural conception) so first we did the HSG (normal results). Given our unexplained infertility (we'd been trying for over a year at this point), the plan was Letrazole plus IUI. The first cycle, he determined that my Estrogen levels were too high so we skipped the Letrazole and did a natural IUI. We did not get pregnant. The second cycle, during my baseline test results he determined that ovulation while imminent while still on my period so again we skipped the Letrazole and did a natural IUI. We did not get pregnant. The third cycle, we were able to do the Letrazole plus and IUI and got pregnant. I miscarried for the second time at 8 weeks.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
I was self pay so it was expensive.

She is really well-informed and thoughtful. She has explained her proposed next steps, regarding treatment, so that she knows that I understand them, and always asks if I'm comfortable with that approach before proceeding. She, not a nurse, called me with my negative beta, and had already thought of what we could do next. This NEVER happened with my previous RE, where I was always called by a nurse and then asked to schedule an appointment with the Dr.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Marni is easiest reached via email, but is very quick to respond if I have any questions or concerns.

How was your experience with Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
If you are looking for a physician who will hold your hand and speak to you in hushed tones, she may not fit the bill. She is there to help you get pregnant. This may sound as though she has a cold bedside manner, which she doesn't. She's actually very pleasant to speak with. That being said, she won't sugarcoat things, and in my experience, I want the details, as grim as they may be. Dr. H is very intelligent and well-read, and I am very confident in her medical abilities. And I know that she cares about my treatment. She has reviews my file before she talks to me, which may seem like common sense, but the number of doctors I have seen in the past 5 years, unfortunately she is in the minority. The thing that has impressed me the most is, when she has to deliver bad news, she calls me, not a nurse, and already has a plan for going forward.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
Be ready for a serious physician. You can tell that she cares, but she is more of a realist. If you're new to infertility treatment, this may seem jarring, but you want someone who will help you get pregnant, not someone who will hold your hand and just make you feel good about undergoing treatment. No one ever got pregnant by holding hands.
Describe the protocols Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron used in your cycles and their degree of success.
After 3 complete transfer failures and one blighted ovum with my previous RE, Dr. H suggested doing a diagnostic hysteroscopy before continuing treatment. So I took off a cycle to get that done and the next cycle I prepped for another eSET. That was non-lupron hormone replacement cycle with baby aspirin, vaginal estrogen, and patches, followed by 4 days of medrol, a z-pack, 300mg Endometrin and PIO. This cycle failed and we plan to do a Endometrial Receptivity Assay next.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron.
Currently minimal (HMO), I have had to pay for tests that aren't covered by my insurance. When I switch to a PPO next year the costs will be greater.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
This is a big clinic with a lot of patients. It's a pretty well-oiled machine. I'm easily able to get in and out for monitoring in the morning and get to work on time. Being a big clinic though it can feel impersonal, but I've managed to build relationships with the staff, so it doesn't feel that way anymore.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?

Describe your experience with your nurse.
Dr. Beltsos had many nurses while I was under her care. It started with Fran and Jen. They were awesome, but soon transferred to a different department in FCI. Then there was Emily and Jessica, Emily is perfectly nice and on top of things, but was never my main nurse, Jessica left suddenly and was replaced by Betsy. Betsy was awesome and always there if I needed a question answered. She transferred to a different doctor at FCI after my second IVF cycle. Since then I've not really had a nurse that seemed as though she was assigned to me.

How was your experience with Angeline N. Beltsos?
Dr. Beltsos is very sweet, almost to an in-genuine level. My consult appointments were generally pretty useless. They just involved her going over the results of my previous cycle, which I was well aware of, and then making a plan for the next cycle, which was usually changed, unbeknownst to me, and communicated via one of her nurses once the next cycle had started. She never really seemed that concerned that I had so many failed cycles when in treatment with her, and the only change in treatment approach was slight tweaks to stimulating drug doses. She also had a revolving door of nurses which was was concerning (how hard was she to work for?), not to mention, since the nurses were the medical professionals I regularly dealt with, it felt like I was constantly having to acclimate myself with those whom I was working with.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Angeline N. Beltsos?
You will have to self-advocate. Keep your own records of everything and don't be afraid to ask questions if your treatment plan doesn't seem quite right.
Describe the protocols Angeline N. Beltsos used in your cycles and their degree of success.
The initial strategy was just to increase the amount of progesterone in my body as I came into treatment with a couple chemical pregnancies under my belt. It started with Clomid and timed intercourse, then adding oral progesterone after 2 cycles, then adding IUI after one cycle. Three IUI cycles with Clomid and progesterone support, then FSH injectables added into the mix for the 4th IUI cycle. All resulting in negative betas. IVF was next. The first cycle was Antagonist protocol which yielded a whopping 4 eggs. Two day 3 embryos transferred, leading to a negative test. The later 2 IVF cycles were Lupron Microflare protocols which were more successful, but still lacked the outcome which we were hoping for.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
Monitoring appointments are so easy. They have early hours and you're normally in and out in under an hour. You start in a main waiting room, are called back in groups to the ultrasound waiting room and, after ultrasound, you go to the lab waiting room, then get your blood drawn, and go on your merry way. If you need to speak to a nurse, the phlebotomist can normally flag one down for you too. No issues.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline N. Beltsos.
Thankfully I have very good insurance and state-mandated fertility coverage. Out of pockets costs were comparatively minimal (Freezing fees- $1200, biopsy fees- $2200, and prescription meds.)

FCI will likely deliver on what you've asked of them - getting you pregnant. However, know that this clinic is a factory. While you will receive good treatment, you will also feel like a number. You will not have access to your doctor outside of the office consultation visits with them. The nursing staff performs all IUI's and the "doctor on call" (who is not one of the physicians listed in the group practice and therefore someone you've never met), will perform your IVF embryo retrieval and transfer. Prior to my embryo transfer, patient instructions were not clear and it was extremely difficult to reach anyone in the clinic. I remember calling 5-10 times and getting transferred to empty voicemail boxes or staff hanging up on me. On the whole, I found that they treat their patients as if they have been through the process (IUI or IVF) before, which leaves you uninformed. To me, it seemed as though they needed to expand their staff to be able to adequately handle the high number of patients. All of this being said, my first consultation was in June 2015, we tried IUI in July and August (unsuccessful), and I was pregnant via IVF by October 2015. Dr. Marut did attend my first ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and was very compassionate when answering my call with an emergency the evening before.

Typically at FCI, you are called from the waiting room in groups. Each patient gathers by the nurse and the rest of the group is called. You move to the ultrasound waiting room as a herd, which as a patient made me feel like a number rather than someone there for individualized care.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Donna was friendly and somewhat compassionate, but I found she was difficult to communicate with. She did not seem open to questions about your treatment and got defensive when I started asking questions about my bloodwork and ultrasound test results prior to IUI. I wanted to be as informed as possible, and asking questions about my LH levels and timing of IUI ruffled her feathers.

How was your experience with Edward Marut?
Dr. Marut seemed kind and knowledgable, but our time with him was very short. We saw him for 5-10 minutes at our initial consultation and 5-10 minutes in a follow up visit to discuss a treatment plan. I completed two rounds of IUI that resulted in negative pregnancy tests. Dr. Marut did not perform the IUI nor did I see him during the course of those treatments. We had another follow up visit with Dr. Marut, at which point we decided to do IVF. I did not see him again during the course of embryo retrieval, transfer or any portion of the IVF cycle. Fortunately, our 1st round of IVF resulted in pregnancy.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
Know that you will be treated by nurses and staff, and not have regular access to or contact with Dr. Marut. His nurse Donna can be difficult to communicate with as she does not seem to accept questions about your treatment very well.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We completed two rounds of IUI (Letrozole + ovulation trigger), followed by 1 month on the pill then IVF the following month. I was pleased that after two unsuccessful rounds of IUI, Dr. Marut did listen to our request to move on to IVF, and agreed that that would be the recommended treatment plan. At this point we had been trying to conceive for nearly two years and were interested in expediting the process.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
Unfortunately, despite my Illinois residency, I was not eligible for the IL state mandated fertility coverage because my employer-based insurance was out of state (BCBS of Minnesota). Therefore, the financial aspect of my care was extremely stressful. Luckily, my insurance did cover fertility treatment, but only up to $15,000 during my lifetime across any insurance plans with my employer. Following my first consultation, the billing specialist printed out the explanation of coverage and stated "this is very bad." Not exactly reassuring words as we embarked on this journey. What this broke down to was all of my labs, ultrasounds, IUI meds and IUI procedures were covered by insurance. When the time came for IVF, I had $12,500 remaining in my insurance coverage. The financial consultant at FCI and my specialty pharmacy instructed that my meds would bill approximately $8,700 to insurance and the IVF procedures could bill anywhere around $5,000. Therefore, my $12,500 would not cover the whole IVF round. They did help me get creative and instructed to purchase my injectable meds out of pocket through a self-pay pharmacy, Freedom Fertility Pharmacy. They provide discounts to those paying out of pocket for medication. I ended up spending $2,050 out of pocket on 4 of the medications, and billed $1500 worth of meds to insurance. I chose this route to purchase the least expensive meds via out of pocket means, and the ones that were the priciest out of pocket but not to outrageous when billed to insurance. The total amount billed to insurance for the IVF procedures was about $4,000. I also paid $1,200 for embryo cryopreservation (not covered by my insurance) and will continue to pay out of pocket annually for embryo storage. While I did benefit from most of the cost being covered by insurance and a successful pregnancy, I was a little frustrated by a couple things. 1) I ended up with remaining insurance coverage, so while I could have billed more of the meds cost to insurance, I suppose it's good to have remaining coverage for next time (we have 4 good embryos frozen for this purpose) 2) I ended up with way more medication than needed. FCI instructed to order a 20-day supply of injectables, while I only ended up taking them for 9 days. Plenty of unused leftover meds, which I will likely donate to a friend or clinic, if the expiration date doesn't allow me to save for future rounds if needed.

I Dr Kaplan definitely remembered me and treated me like an individual and not a number. A few of the nurses did too, but I did occasionally get mixed up with other patients. The clinic is very large and I think they do a good job considering how many patients go through there.

How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
Early on, I felt that he was so confident I was going to have quick success that he didn't spend a lot of time with me and try to get to know my case. He frequently seemed in a rush and too busy to stop and explain things thoroughly. However, after a couple failed attempts he seemed more determined to help and investigate new approaches to understand my 'unexplained infertility'. He mentioned a few times that he had discussed my case to a few of his colleagues. Overall, I really like his demeanor and feel at ease with him and able to talk not only about the course of treatment but also about the emotional toll of infertility (note - a few times he seemed really busy and our meeting felt a little rushed). I still believe he is focused on finding the best approach to get us a family with the least amount of stress and cost.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
I would say don't be discouraged if you don't hear directly from him frequently and you have to communicate through his nurses. If you find a helpful nurse, he will get your messages and I believe he does sit and think about his patients carefully. On a similar note, he may not be right for you (or the FCI clinic in general) if you prefer a very hands-on one-on-one type of doctor.

There are a lot of people moving through the clinic, but it is well organized and the waits are not usually very long. The space is very well-appointed and doesn't feel sterile/hospital like. It's very comfortable to wait there and the entire staff is friendly. It's not a scary place to go.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Everyone knew us by name, including the wonderful Erika who brought us back, the phlebotomist Jamie who we had every time, and even the people at the front desk/check out. Our nurses celebrated our successes and truly sympathized with our setbacks. Dr. Kaplan clearly sets the tone in this way - after 3 failed cycles and a miscarriage, he was so happy for us when we finally got to bring home our baby. Despite their volume, I felt like I was truly important and they were all rooting for us.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I am forever grateful to our nurse Tammy. I had a million questions and overthought everything throughout our very long fertility journey. Tammy was available by email and was always quick to respond. We dealt with a variety of other nurses, notably Jamie and Jill, and every one of them was well versed on our case, compassionate and patient with my many questions and squeamish nature.

How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
Dr. Kaplan has a reputation for being the best for a reason. He is energized and comes into every meeting with a game plan. He is totally open to patient questions and ideas, and can thoughtfully explain why something is a good option or not. He is considerate of the fact that the infertility treatment is not the only thing going on in one's life, and willing to work around timing conflicts. He always keeps in mind and informs the patient about financial implications of decisions so that you can weigh that piece as well. There was never a one-size-fits-all approach: when things didn't work, he changed them. When we experienced failure after failure, he never let us give up hope. I truly believe that we would not have our amazing daughter without him, simply because I could not have kept going with the treatment without his support and encouragement.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
This would be my advice no matter who the doctor was - do your own research. Go into meetings with the doctors with ideas, so that you never feel like a stone was left unturned.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I never had trouble with stimming, so I don't recall much about those protocols. I was a good responder and had lots of eggs, my issue seemed to be with implantation. The cycle that finally worked included 2 months of Depot Lupron, and a hysteroscopy. Then when I went back to try for baby #2, Dr. Kaplan strongly advised that we skip all of that and just do a really straightforward FET (Lupron, patches, PIO every 3rd day and progesterone suppositories, along with a few other things like Medrol/baby aspirin). I wanted to recreate the cycle that worked with my daughter so we didn't waste time/embryos. He argued that after carrying a full term pregnancy and nursing for 10 months, my body was a completely different environment. He was right, I got pregnant on the first try without all the additional/invasive/expensive extras.

We were covered at about 90%. There was a copay to see Dr. Kaplan (I think $60). But we didn't see him that often. I would say a significant part of our out of pocket expenses were parking ($6 every monitoring appointment adds up!). We also paid out of pocket for PGS testing.

I found the nursing staff [at FCI River North] to be very frustrating with sharing conflicting/competing information, the lack of compassion, and lack of information shared about procedures. I felt that I had to turn into a nurse myself to make sure I was aware of what all was happening to my body and I found that to be unacceptable. The whole experience added so much more stress to an already stressful situation.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
It feels like a cattle call, but you typically aren't waiting too long. I've had many issues with calling and not being able to leave a voicemail or have one returned in a timely manner with trying to book appointments.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
A little too blunt for our taste. It often felt like information shared was in the form of "ripping the bandaid off" and with dry humor. We always wanted the honest answers but would have preferred more compassion surrounding this topic.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
We primarily worked with Anto Higgins and she was the shining light in our experience with Dr.Sipe and River North FCI. The only thing I felt bad about was that Anto would take any of the negative feedback/ frustrations that we shared personally. I found the nursing staff to be very frustrating with sharing conflicting/competing information, the lack of compassion, and lack of information shared about procedures. I felt that I had to turn into a nurse myself to make sure I was aware of what all was happening to my body and I found that to be unacceptable. The whole experience added so much more stress to an already stressful situation.

How was your experience with Christopher Sipe?
He is a smart doctor. He relies heavily on results, studies, and research. We appreciate all of those things but also wanted compassion and personalization. I also didn't enjoy the 'poor responder" placed on me much of the time. We also felt that we had to do a lot of homework as supplemental treatments weren't really discussed. I didn't like feeling like we had to remember everything to ask or it wouldn't be offered.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Christopher Sipe?
Don't expect to be coddled and do your own homework.

After working with several nurses over the years at FCI, Jen is my favorite nurse! She's compassionate, responsive and goes above and beyond to be helpful...While I like FCI, I will say that you can feel like a number sometimes. The monitoring for egg retrievals has always been my least favorite part. I'm not crazy about some of the technicians while others can be lovely. I've found at times things get lost in the shuffle...We've had trouble with getting mis information about our embryos in the lab (we were told twice that we didn't have any normal ones when we did)

Dr. Marut is incredibly thorough, and responsive. After 3 years of being a patient of FCI, I've never felt in such great care as I do with Dr. Marut. He's compassionate, incredibly intelligent and takes great care to review his cases. While he has a human element, he doesn't sugar coat things either. He's direct, and honest...I really couldn't be in better hands.

How was your experience with Edward Marut?
Dr. Marut has been so attentive to detail during our time with him. We unfortunately suffered a late miscarriage and not only was he compassionate, he was incredibly responsive and was a big reason we had the strength to try again. I can't say enough good things about him.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
If you are looking for someone who is honest, straight to the point and highly knowledgeable in the field of fertility, Dr. Marut is the doctor for you.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I've done 2 egg retrievals with Dr. Marut. In my first one, he followed the protocol I had followed with Dr. Kaplan (based on the fact that that protocol worked well for me. ) I was on gonal f, menopur and gainerelex. When I didn't respond well, he changed it up for my next retrieval (I was on Lupron and menopur). I was happy to see a change in the protocol which did produce good embryos for us.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
$3000 per transfer $11,500 for retrieval $2,200 for biopsy $500 for sperm freeze $1,200 for embryo freeze

It's a huge clinic, so they can really get you in and out very quickly for monitoring appointments. I've very rarely had a long wait there and things generally move really quickly. However, you do get treated like a number.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
During routine monitoring appointments, I definitely felt like a number. There were also times when it felt like the nurses were on autopilot, just giving me the "script" for the phases of my diagnosis. As things moved along (first failed IUI), Dr. Kaplan became more personally involved and we began to build a very close relationship with him.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
They generally got back to me with results on the same day, but definitely felt like they were following a script and hadn't reviewed my results with the doctor besides saying "Dr. Kaplan says X". There were a few times that they were completely confused or unaware of my situation, and one nurse was particularly rude. The IVF consult with a nurse coordinator was awful, I left that appointment feeling worse than I had at any point, it didn't provide a ton of information and left me questioning a lot of decisions. It was also scheduled far too late into my cycle, and didn't leave me adequate time to get all of my meds.

How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
He was incredibly informative, empathetic, and I really enjoyed being his patient. He did a great job of giving us some comfort during difficult times without creating false hope or expectations. He was always available for phone calls, or appointments when we needed them. I really couldn't have expected more from a doctor in this situation and I recommend him! Just make sure that you take time to connect with him and be prepared. I always had a list of my questions and made the most of the time we had with him.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
He has a very busy practice, and sometimes you will feel like a number. If you have questions, ask to speak to him, or make an appointment with him to go over your future plans. Make sure to check in after each step of the process to ensure your happiness and success.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I had high AMH, so we made sure to stim very gently. Two of my IUI's were with 50mg of Clomid, the other was with a very low dose of follistim. My egg retrieval triggered with lupron/hcg since I had a very high follicle count at the time of trigger, and we went to a freeze all cycle since I had pretty severe OHSS.

This clinic [Fertility Centers of Illinois] is very large and therefore personalized care is difficult to come by...I had some miscommunication about when to do specific things. At the end, nobody offered me information about embryo grade. I didn't even know there was a grading scale so after I found out, I had to call back and ask. I also had some issues with having to go to a downtown location for weekend monitoring, and them telling me to just go to my regular office for my next monitoring (I couldn't call to make an appointment because they were closed) and then showing up to a frazzled/annoyed front desk staff.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
This clinic is very large and therefore personalized care is difficult to come by. If you're a hands-off kind of person, that may not bother you at all. For me, I expected more.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
I only spoke with her once. Our initial meeting was very rushed and both my husband and I felt like we didn't have a minute to think of any questions. She told us everything would be no problem and we would be pregnant in no time. She never set realistic expectations. I had no idea I'd never see her again, basically. I had no idea she wouldn't be doing my egg retrieval, but instead a random doctor on call. She never personally reached out after my retrieval. I had no idea if I was supposed to schedule a follow-up appointment. Basically she just threw me onto the conveyer belt.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My nurse was very nice but disorganized. She always seemed surprised when I had extra questions for her, however she definitely made the effort to stay on the phone with me to answer any questions I had. A couple of times I felt insecure about her but overall she proved to be my greatest source of information during my cycle.

How was your experience with Jane Nani?
Dr Nani reminds me very much of a surgeon. She is probably very skilled at her job but she is not a great communicator and doesn't show a lot of compassion for what her patients are going through. She provided very little information about what to expect and therefore my first cycle was extremely stressful.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jane Nani?
Be more clear about what to expect in general, from an experience standpoint. Set realistic expectations. Be clear that just because she is your doctor, that doesn't mean you will see her very often.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jane Nani.
Fortunately most of it was covered by insurance. I had to pay $1500 for egg freezing, though.

You don't get to speak directly to the doctor often, as there are a lot of patients at this clinic [FCI]. But my experience has been that they are good at getting messages to and from the doctor through the nurse. Her nurse Marni is excellent with communication, and quickly gets my questions to the doctor and the answers back to me.... It's a giant place. I like that about it because I know that if I make my monitoring appointments by x time I'll get to work when I need to. Some may feel like a number, but I prefer getting in and out and on to my life.

How was your experience with Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
She's very candid with the direction she thinks treatment should go. A couple of times I had questions about why we were doing something a particular way, and I've asked if treatment could be adjusted. She's always been open to discussing alternatives, and has been ok with adjusting treatment if it's reasonable. She's a bit blunt (but that's what I prefer), and I get the sense that strong feelings make her uncomfortable. But she was always kind and never made me feel badly for having them.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron?
Make use of the nurses! She sees a lot of patients, but I'm still satisfied with the level of communication because it's easy to get through to the nurse and get my questions answered quickly.
Describe the protocols Jennifer E. Hirshfeld-Cytron used in your cycles and their degree of success.
So far, IUI with 50mg Clomid. These did not result in a pregnancy, but when my lining was thin she was good about adjusting. I did have good response with the Clomid, so there was no need to change that.

Very busy, make sure to try a few doctors until you're with one that you're comfortable with. I switched from Baltos to Rapisarda in the beginning. Nothing to do with her personally but she was so busy and on vacations and medical leave it was going to be 4 months before I could start treatments with her. I didn't want to wait any longer so found a doctor who was open.

Dr Rapisarda's nurse at the Chicago clinic is amazing. I think her name is Christina. She is so kind, a great listener, organized and compassionate. She was so excited for me when I got he positive pregnancy result and devastated when she learned I had an ectopic pregnancy. She really made my experience pleasant
How was your experience with John Rapisarda?
For the most part I was happy with him as a doctor. I had 2 embryos transferred and 1 of them was ectopic and ended in me having my Fallopian tube and baby removed to save the other baby. He was very thoughtful and personally called me to talk with me about my iotions since he was not at the clinic that day. My only real frustration was that we retrieved 29 eggs and only ended up with 3 embryos which is a huge variance. There was no explanation given as to why there were so few. I had to ask much later on and even then he wasn't sure and had to look in my chart and said that the notes mentioned there could be poor egg quality. I was hoping for more insight

Weaknesses [at FCI]: men are considered not the primary patient. With MFI this is a huge weakness. My husband felt uncomfortable in the sperm rooms because they were off of the main hallway and he could hear all the people coming and going, and his calls were not always returned the way mine are. They need to remember male patients are often half of the equation. Also very large, so it can feel like a cattle call during blood draws and ultrasounds in the morning.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Strengths: top embryologists, super organized, convenient to my home and work, clean, made parking accessible. Weaknesses: men are considered not the primary patient.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Sipe was very friendly, and it helped that he went to med school with my husband's urologist. He used humor at times (never in a way that made me uncomfortable), and he was respectful of our apprehension/pessimism. He did a good job explaining the steps, which I appreciated. But I should note that while he treated me he was not on call for my retrieval or transfer, so different doctors did the actual procedures. But it was explained this was a possibility at the very beginning, so it wasn't a surprise.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
I worked very closely with the nurses and emailed them often. They called frequently (sometimes daily) to tell me anything about my blood draws and any changes to my protocol. There was one day where I did not get a call (my coordinator was off) and sort of freaked out, but after calling and leaving a message I had a prompt response. All told, it was a good experience.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?

How was your experience with Christopher Sipe?
I thought Dr. Sipe was knowledgeable and kind. He made sure we understood what was happening. Our clinic was large, so while he did our consultation, explained what we were testing (and did some himself) and gave the results and prescribed next steps, I did not see him each time I was in the clinic. For me this was fine because it meant I didn't need to be there as long each time.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Christopher Sipe?
He will tell you what is going on in a way you can understand, but doesn't seem big on sugar-coating.
Describe the protocols Christopher Sipe used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We needed ivf with icsi due to male factor issues, so we were trying to limit my follicle growth without suppressing. Sorry, but I don't remember my protocols exactly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Christopher Sipe.
There was a financial counselor assigned to our case, which was helpful. They ran our insurance and gave us the best description of services and costs (better than the insurance company), and it was very accurate. Since we had insurance coverage our costs were very luckily minimal.

FCI is slow to release records. That's my biggest complaint. It's also a huge clinic and it can be irritating to feel like you're just a number to them. I didn't know where else to put this, but I had a WONDERFUL experience with a specific ultrasound tech at the River North location. Rosa is the best, and I would wait upwards of an hour to make sure she did my scans. She is careful with her work, she is so compassionate, and she's very down-to-earth. If she has to give you bad news, she does it carefully and with your feelings in mind. I think Rosa is the best thing about FCI, second only to Dr. Kaplan!

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Kaplan is extremely caring. He is very touchy - frequently gives hugs and kisses after a transfer - this could be a negative if you don't like that, but to me it was reassuring and he felt like a caring father or uncle. He looks you in the eye and is very open to new treatment options if you're at the end of the road.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Jamie was a very good nurse, and I recommend her. She was organized and rolled with the punches with me. I was not always an easy patient because I had very strong opinions about my treatment plan. She always listened, and would go back and ask Dr. Kaplan before telling me no on whatever I was asking. I really appreciated that. I also worked with Donna as my IVF nurse in Highland Park. I have equally good things to say about her. Very high quality nurse, very on top of things. Only complaint is that she didn't always call back with instructions until I reached out to her late in the day. On the gestational carrier side of things, we worked with Jen at River North, and with Carrie in Highland Park. Both of these nurses were wonderful, two of the most optimistic and happy nurses I've worked with throughout the entire journey.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?

How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
Dr. Kaplan was my third infertility doctor, so I was sadly an infertility "pro" by the time I got to him. He was perfect for me at that stage of treatment because he was very open to my feedback and how I wanted to direct my care. He let me try new things that were somewhat controversial, but he did hold me back from things that he thought had no chance. However, Dr. Kaplan's biggest negatives are as follows. He is extremely busy, and he doesn't always seem to read through your file carefully before he meets with you. So you have to be very on top of things, and sometimes remind him of where things stand. He also can seem a little bit rushed during conversations because he has so many patients to see. Another negative is that Dr. Kaplan likes to "batch" his cycles so that most retrievals and transfers occur around the same time of the month. This didn't personally bother me but I know this really irks some of his other patients that I've talked to.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Be proactive. Know your own case. Be your own advocate. Don't be afraid to speak up and ask to try new treatments that he might not mention to you. Dr. Kaplan is kind and flexible and caring, but he's busy. So you have to work together as a team to get to the best outcome.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
9 days before transfer. Immediately prior to transfer doxycycline and medrol. Progesterone supplementation included PIO injections, endometrin. Lining was 5.3 with triple pattern, estradoil 749 on last lining check. Result was a positive pregnancy test. Repeated the IV of intralipids 16 days after transfer (6 days after first positive pregnancy test). Pregnancy is currently at 12 weeks. September 2015 (cycle on gestational carrier): Priming included lupron, vivelle dot patches, baby aspirin daily. Immediately prior to transfer doxycycline and medrol. Progesterone supplementation included PIO injections, endometrin. Lining was 8.8 with triple pattern, estradoil 1,101 on last lining check. Result was a positive pregnancy test. Pregnancy is currently at 7 weeks.

I asked if I was then going to lose those follicles, she said no, when I most certainly would. I did not appreciate the misinformation.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
The clinic was well run, the receptionist were fast and efficient, the ultrasound techs were very nice and fast. It just seems so busy and like your case is not getting much attention. Then, when doing the retrieval, the whole process was great, fast and efficient, same with IUI.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Doctor Kaplan when I was able to talk to him in person was very compassionate and never made me feel like he was going to stop working with me after we had several failed and/or cancelled cycles, which other doctors would do immediately, as you would mess up their "stats". Having said that, he has too many patients, and he is just not very in tune with your specific case, so if you have a tricky situation like mine, he is a great guy, but did not tweaked my treatment as he should in my opinion

Dr Kaplan's nurse communication was short, abrupt and gave very little in the form of information. It felt like pulling teeth. She was Incredibly unhelpful and truly jaded. She seemed like she was really tired of the same questions and had no patience with the patients. It is a pity, as we all are so lost and scared when we are walking the assisted fertility route.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?
  • Failed to convey critical information
How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
He is incredibly caring, will try with you until you give up, will not pressure you, but will inform you of your options. The bad thing is that he has too many patients, and therefore no time to really tailor treatment to someone that is not responding well to drug stimulation, he just couldn't keep track of who you were or what your situation was.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Be your own advocate, he is a kind doctor, but way too busy and might not give you the attention and tailoring your case might need.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
Under Illinois law, I was lucky to be mostly completely covered by insurance. The deductibles plus some test that were not covered were the only expense, but not significant if you compare it with out pocket expense other people experience.

They [FCI] are a successful clinic and treat a lot of patients. They call several patients to blood and ultrasound at the same time, which can make you feel like a number; however, the care you receive is individualized and the nurses are empathic...Our last FET was done from out of state and the coordination between his staff and our out of town monitoring clinic was excellent....I was not assigned a main nurse, but I would copy all of his [Dr. Kaplan] nurses on emails and I would get a response typically within an hour or so. Whenever I called to speak to them, I was always able to reach one of them for answers to my questions. I was monitoring from out of town and there were a few times they had to repeatedly follow up with the monitoring clinic- they were on top of getting the information that they needed.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
It can be overwhelming as a new patient because it's such a large practice. I would advise staying on top of your meds, checking and double checking information, and ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel comfortable. There is a lot to juggle when doing IVF- don't be afraid to get things clarified.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
They are a successful clinic and treat a lot of patients. They call several patients to blood and ultrasound at the same time, which can make you feel like a number; however, the care you receive is individualized and the nurses are empathic.

Dr Kaplan has several nurses that work for him. I was not assigned a main nurse, but I would copy all of his nurses on emails and I would get a response typically within an hour or so. How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
I have a long history with Dr. Kaplan, after being cancelled at another clinic due to poor response from stimulation drugs and having miscarried from my first IVF at an additional clinic. Dr Kaplan does not mind taking risks and is not concerned about his statistics. He was willing to cycle us even though my response was low. We have done many cycles with him and can attest to his compassion and expertise. During our 6th cycle, we finally became pregnant with twins, but lost them after being born premature. We were devastated and he and his team handled us with kid gloves until we became pregnant again during our 7th cycle. During this time, one transfer was cancelled due to lining concerns. Dr Kaplan wanted to make sure conditions were optimal. He is not afraid to give his honest expert opinion, which we relied on to make difficult decisions. We have had two additional unsuccessful FET's since our daughter was born and are still hopeful one of our remaining embryos will lead to a healthy pregnancy. We are limited to eSET, so it may take a few times. Our last FET was done from out of state and the coordination between his staff and our out of town monitoring clinic was excellent.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Understand that sometimes it takes a few cycles, but Dr Kaplan is aggressive and willing to take risks with patients that have had a poor response to stimulation drugs. He is honest and compassionate.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
He tried a range of protocols and had several transfers using my own eggs prior to suggesting donor eggs.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
We have spent tens of thousands of dollars here. A lot of it was covered by insurance when we were living in the state; however none is covered by insurance now that we moved.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Nice facility, no free parking though- have to park in a paid garage, then walk outside to get to the office. Very long wait times and you have to wait for each thing you're having done that day. Friendly techs mostly, friendly staff at checkout
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr Kaplan is an excellent doctor who has taken the time to answer all our questions and has full discussions with me to make sure I am informed and confident before each procedure. Unfortunately, the clinic feels a little like a factory where there are multiple waiting rooms and you have to sit in line when you get there, again to get an ultrasound, then another for blood work. The techs don't really know me and I wind up waiting a total of nearly an hour at each appointment. This is frustrating, but dr Kaplan has an excellent reputation and I think he has done a great job for me so far, so it's worth staying with him, despite the long wait times and anonymity in his lab/clinic. Also his nurse is available for me any time I need her and has been so patient with the million questions I've had at every step
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Ilynne is always available by phone, explains things very well, very prompt in giving me results, and very patient!
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?

How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
I've heard some people say he's not the most personable, but I thoroughly disagree. I felt like I connected with him and had complete trust at our very first consultation. He said very candid but understanding and explains things quite well to manage my expectations through this process. He's worked with a lot of celebrities, but he treats me like I'm just as important as every one of his patients and gives me whatever attention I need. He guides me to informed decisions instead of trying to tell me what to do, but if I ask his opinion he will give it. My husband likes him too!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
You won't go wrong with him! He won't rush the process and it may take longer than you think but everything he does is to get the best outcomes possible! Just be prepared for extremely long waiting room times
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
We did a full month of tests and monitoring, then an egg retrieval and planned from the beginning of that to take a month after the retrieval before the transfer and freeze the embryos. He says he does this for most patients as he's seen better success rates and for me in particular because I had some high levels that put me at risk for ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. We talked with him and decided to have my embryos genetically tested- he said that increases your chances of implanting 1 embryo to about the same as if you transfer 2 untested, and we could screen out any chromosomal abnormalities. We are now in the middle of a frozen embryo transfer which will happen later this month.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
They set up a very specific time, but a dozen other people are scheduled for the same time and it's a packed waiting room with long wait times every day
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
They charge for everything but you know what they will be ahead of time. There are costs for the retrieval plus anesthesiologist, medications, then you pay for the freezing, we chose to do the genetic testing which was an additional charge, then you have to pay to have the embryo thawed, then the transfer itself. Insurance didn't cover anything other than the 1st month of labs and ultrasounds, so for us the cost has been about $15,000-$20,000 when it's all said and done

My first round I was very intimidated by the process and relied heavily on the nurses [at FCI] to communicate often and answer my questions. Even by the second round I constantly had questions that I needed answered. They did a great job even though I'm sure they answer the same questions over and over again to all of their egg freezing patients. Forming a relationship with the nursing staff is extremely important as they'll be the ones delivering results during every monitoring appointment. I was glad to have a good relationship with mine.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
It was great to work with aParent- the nurses and staff couldn't have been nicer and more organized. I always felt like I was in good hands especially with the lab right there. The only thing that felt strange was going through this process (waiting in waiting rooms, etc). with IVF patients near me. It seems like a strange mix as they were trying to get pregnant and I was trying to preserve my fertility.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Kaplan took the time to sit down with me before I began this process to explain all of the details on what I could expect. He never sugar coated anything- but talked to me like a real human being. He helped to personalize what could have been a very intimidating process. His bedside manner is truly second to none.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
My first round I was very intimidating by the process and relied heavily on the nurses to communicate often and answer my questions. Even by the second round I constantly had questions that I needed answered. Forming a relationship with the nursing staff is extremely important as they'll be the ones delivering results during every monitoring appointment. I was glad to have a good relationship with mine.
How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
I know from seeing him on tv and in the media that Dr. Kaplan is extremely successful so was worried I wouldn't have much face to face contact with him. but I was wrong. I met with Dr. Kaplan before I began this process, the day of my retrieval and after the retrieval. Going with a doctor I have 100% trust in is the only way I could have made this decision and I couldn't feel better about it.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Trust the process- it may seem intimidating but it's not at all. I was scared about doing the shots and if I was doing it right but really they're worth the little. Knowing Dr. Kaplan is monitoring your results the entire time, day by day should make you feel 100% confident about this process.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I froze my eggs twice with Dr. Kaplan. After the first round i had 7 eggs to freeze. For the second round, Dr. Kaplan made some adjustments and the results showed as I had 18 eggs! It's obvious why all of Chicago trusts Dr. Kaplan with their fertility treatments- whether you're trying to get pregnant or wanting to preserve your fertility.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
Lucky to say insurance covered a lot of my egg freezing costs, so the lower amount that I spent on this process was worth every penny (and then some!). Think about how much money we spend on vacations, etc and then think about this as an insurance policy. It's the most important money you can spend.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
I was amazed at how many people are struggling with infertility! There are several different waiting rooms at FCI, and each of them is usually packed with women and their partners, waiting the same labs as you. Just be prepared to wait, even if your appointment start time is 8:00 a.m., you may be there a while. Bring a book. Relax. It's not a big deal. You will get seen, and when they see you, they will make you feel like you are their only patient. I promise.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Marut came to every ultrasound! And he genuinely cared about how I was feeling. Our nurse was so compassionate. Always available to answer questions, find meds when the pharmacy fell through, etc. They care!!
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Lindsay is the nurse we interacted with the most. My husband and I cannot say enough wonderful things about her! She is so attentive, responsive and genuinely caring. She makes us feel like her only patients. When she called to tell me we were pregnant, her joy was radiating through the phone. On the flip side, when we suffered the missed miscarriage, she cried with us, hugged and consoled us, and even got us in for a second opinion ultrasound at FCI before we decided how to proceed. She followed up with me regularly between the miscarriage and now, just to ask how I am feeling. And when I shared my frustration over how my OB/GYN handled delivering the news of the miscarriage to me, she helped me find a new doctor. And it's not just Lindsay. Everyone we interacted with at FCI shows such genuine care and concern. I highly recommend this facility.
How was your experience with Edward Marut?
Dr. Marut is an extremely compassionate physician who takes the time to get to know you and your unique situation. He then recommends a course of care that fits your needs and diagnosis. I appreciate that he starts out conservatively and doesn't push IVF right away. When we got pregnant, he was overjoyed for my husband and I. He attended every ultrasound (not all docs at FCI do this), and he explained what we were seeing, asked me how I was feeling, explained different treatments for morning sickness, etc. And when we had our miscarriage, he was genuinely sad for our loss, expressed his remorse, and handled the follow up care with compassion and understanding. It really helped my husband and I with our grief, and we now feel like we can move forward with hope. He is a wonderful doctor with the bedside manner you hope for in a physician.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
Book an appointment with no hesitation. When we started at FCI, we were assigned to Dr. Marut because he had the first available appointment. And I am so glad we ended up in his care!
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
At our initial consult, Dr. Marut reviewed my labs from my regular OB/GYN and my husband's semen analysis. He was confident, based on our labs, that he could get us pregnant and said as much. We had several more blood panels run that day, and I was told to call when my next cycle began. He recommended we try three IUI cycles using Letrozole and Ovidrel to bring on ovulation. And I used Corinne gel suppositories from the day after IUI until I either got my period, or had a positive pregnancy test. The first IUI didn't work. So we started up again the next cycle. Followed the same protocol, and this time, I got pregnant! We learned via blood draw at FCI. I returned every 2-3 days to monitor the beta levels, and continued to use Crinone daily. We came in every week for ultrasounds (3 total) before Dr. Marut graduated us from FCI, and sent my files to my OB/GYN. Unfortunately, I ended up having a missed miscarriage. The ultrasounds all looked normal, so this came as a quite a shock to everyone, Dr. Marut included. It's been 6 weeks since the miscarriage, and we just started back with Dr. Marut and his team. First order of business, I am going in for a saline ultrasound. We are to use protection this cycle, and next cycle, Dr. Marut wants to monitor my body's natural process and see if I am producing follicles on my own. That will mean bloodwork and ultrasounds. If needed, he will prescribe something to bring on my cycle, and I may return to the Letrozole/Ovidrel treatment plan. We shall see!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
I have insurance, but it doesn't cover infertility. Every IUI was paid for out of pocket, but the clinic offers some sort of discount for patients who pay out of pocket (I'm not sure how much. I never asked. I just know that we didn't have to pay the full amount listed). I believe IUI itself was around $200. The sperm washing was more expensive - around $750.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
We rarely spoke with Dr. Marut, only if we scheduled a separate consultation with him, and even those were only available twice/week, so it was difficult to get in touch with him.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Dr. Marut's nurses (specifically Lindsay, Jennifer, and Myung) were amazing. They were compassionate, understanding, patient, etc. They answered all of my calls and emails in a timely fashion, and when I had an emergency situation, they remained calm and handled the situation well.
How was your experience with Edward Marut?
During every consultation we had, Dr. Marut made us feel like it was our turn to have a baby next - that we were RIGHT there. Some people maybe want to feel that way, but for us, we needed him to set realistic expectations. So 7 IUIs later, we still aren't pregnant (unexplained infertility), and we're frustrated and looking for second opinions. While we understand that unexplained infertility is somewhat common, we'd still like to know what could be causing the issues, what we haven't tested for yet, etc.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
Don't let him make you feel stupid. I would see a story on the news about a new fertility treatment, or read about a new study online, and write it down to ask him about. He (metaphorically) rolled his eyes at me, laughing and acting like I was a crazy infertile lady. Really, I was just trying to ask questions and learn more, and to understand what else was out there for us that could help us figure out why this wasn't happening for us. He made me feel like I couldn't ask questions, or that if I did, my questions were silly.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
One round of Letrezole with timed intercourse, followed by 2 rounds of Letrezole with IUI. When those failed to work, we moved to Follistim injectables with IUI.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
We paid for consultations with Dr. Marut (usually around $125) and medications ($180 per cycle). Otherwise, everything was covered by insurance.

At a smaller clinic [than FCI] I think the experience with Dr Kaplan would have been much better in that regard...FCI can run like a well-oiled machine most of the time. Their early morning monitoring is perfect for squeezing them in before work, for the most part. However, because they batch their patients, there comes a point where they have so many patients coming in at the same time that the wait can be long and excruciating. The office staff is always pleasant and the atmosphere is comforting. It is overall a good clinic but you will feel like a number.

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
After every failed transfer, there was no discussion as to what could have happened. It was more just always heading toward the next transfer without having time to regroup. When I had questions, I had to go through the nurses which sometimes left me feeling unsure if the information back was coming from the doctor or if it was just a standard response.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
Jill was always very nice and expressed compassion during any negative pregnancy tests. My only issue was getting replies by email that were too short or not answering every questions. I always got the impression that emails were getting rushed through wish made me nervous about the care I was receiving and the potential for mistakes. Otherwise I found all the nurses to be kind and always answered my emails.
What specific things went wrong at this clinic?

How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
Dr Kaplan did show compassion during appointments which was important to us. He was always very understanding of the emotional impact of IVF as well as the financial. I did very much respect his knowledge and opinions. However, I sometimes felt like our course of treatment was not specifically tailored to us. The biggest issue was the inability to communicate with him directly. Perhaps I could have been more of an advocate for myself in this area, but I did wish I could have gotten more background information as the procedures went on. Without that, I was left wondering why certain decisions were being made and it was not a good feeling. I do think the biggest issue is the number of patients he has which likely does not allow as much time for each patient, or to allow much direct communicate. At a smaller clinic I think the experience with Dr Kaplan would have been much better in that regard.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Be prepared with every question you have when going to your consultations with him. It may be the only opportunity you have to ask him. Everything else will have to filter through his nurses.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
My first IVF was the standard birth control followed by low doses of Follistim. It resulted in 3 eggs, 2 embryos. I was oversupressd by the Bcp. Second IVF was estrogen priming with high dosage of Follistim and menopur. Much better response at 11 eggs and 6 embryos. This resulted in a healthy live birth. 3rd IVF (3 years later) was the same as the previous but resulted in 6 eggs, 2 blastocysts. The hope was that by replicating the successful cycle we would again be successful. Negative pregnancy test.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
The clinic is very large and is therefore organized and timely. At times this can make you feel like a number because there are so many people getting bloodwork and ultrasounds. Billing has been confusing at times and was slow to respond to inquiries on 2 occasions. It is easy to get an appointment for monitoring but can be difficult to get on the Dr's schedule. Overall I would recommend because I think they get results and treat the patients fairly.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Kaplan always treated me like a human, and a special one and never made me feel rushed to leave and seemed to sincerely care about my outcome and well-being. The clinic is really large and at blood and ultrasound appointments I felt like a number at times because there are SO many people there each day.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
Dr. Kaplan's nurses were good, but not great. Erica was always very helpful, quick to respond to questions and compassionate. Jill at times seemed frustrated with questions and didn't always sound sincere when showing compassion when delivering bad news.
How was your experience with Brian Kaplan?
Dr. Kaplan has an excellent bed-side manner and has always spent time with me to address any questions or concerns I have had. He has never made me feel rushed or that my concerns were not valid. He adjusted my protocol and transfer date based on my responses to the medications. He gave me assurances when I felt nervous and made me feel at ease during retrieval and transfer procedures.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
He is very busy and it can be difficult to get on his schedule, so do so early. But he is understanding and willing to listen and answer questions.
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
Based on our history (1 baby conceived with femera) and diagnoses he recommended we go straight to IVF after trying 5 cycles of femera with my OB. We used the Luteal Lupron protocol for stimulation/retrieval. I was monitored closely because I had a lot of follicles due to having PCOS. I had 43 eggs retrieved, 10 of which made it to 5 day freeze. We did PGS testing and 4 of the 10 were genetically normal. We transferred 1 frozen during our first transfer and it ended in a chemical pregnancy. We transferred another frozen 2 months later and I am currently 6 weeks along with that one.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
We have insurance coverage for IVF, so our costs were not high, aside from PGS.

Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Strengths - great statistics, nurses call back very early on in the day with instructions, convent locations, Weaknesses - due to all those great statistics, they are slammed with patients and you really need to advocate for yourself.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Went to both their Highland park location and River North. Their Chicago location had several waiting rooms and you would sit in multiple for each bloodwork and ultrasounds appointment. Morning appointments could take up to an hour. Their Highland park office you were in and out within 20 minutes. On the flip side, the ultrasound techs in Chicago walk you through their process and many times will give you your follicle count at the time you see them (which is SUPER helpful for us worry-warts). I've only actually seen the doctor a handful of times and both egg retrieval have been done by a different doctor on staff that day. Special attention from the doctor does not exist here.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff.
My regular nurse was fantastic. There was a fill in nurse as well who was even better. They always called and time and I had no issues with them. My major issue became communication between my testing lab, embryologist and the finance office (person in charge of getting insurance approvals). My first cycle almost got cancelled in the middle of stims because they forgot to get prior approval. My lab almost didn't do PGS testing because someone sent them a note saying we only wanted PGD (especially frustrating because we had so many PGS issues the first batch it was evident that would want that done again). Also, as I explained before, the embryologist forgot to call on the crucial day 5 to tell us if any embryos made it.

How was your experience with Edward Marut?
Very personable and lovely to meet however, he can be very clinical with bad news. I wish there was more opportunities to get to interact with him more but I only had a face to face after two rounds of disappointing egg retrieval.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
Be your own advocate. There are so many patients that things can slip through the cracks. For instance, they forgot to call me for my results on my day 5 embryos. I waiting all day hemming and hawing if I should call to find out but decided to try and be patient and not bother them. Nobody called. By the time I finally caved and called they had closed. Night nurse had no idea what my results were so I had to spend a very nervous night wondering if any made it to day 5.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I had two egg retrieval (needed to do frozen for day 5 PGD and PGS testing due to genetic condition). First round got a disappointing four eggs of which only one made to blast. Going in I had an AFC of 9 so looking back I wish he would have suggested we wait a month for better odds. Two months previous I had an AFC of 20 to begin with. Second ER he doubled the follistim and Menopur and we got 15 eggs (4 made it to day 5). All turned out to have PGS/PGD issues. Third round had 20 AFC so we started but eventually follicle count dropped so we cancelled. Will be trying new procedure next time.

It's a big clinic [Fertility Centers of Illinois]. For some, that may not be the right fit. For me, I knew many others who had success with them. And I figured because they see so many patients, they might have more "out of the box" ideas that they've tried with others which worked. They have many doctors, and are open in some form every day of the year - because your IVF cycle won't pause based on the holidays or a doctor's schedule. They could always accommodate me, any day I needed.

All the staff is very kind and caring. They see a lot of patients. The admin/scheduler person knew me by name. Dr Marut was straightforward and always answered all of my questions in it meetings. He explained everything thoroughly.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My primary nurse was nice. She sometimes seemed a little overwhelmed or unorganized. I countered this with always being informed and organized myself. The rest of the staff was always very kind and caring. They see lots of people daily but always made me feel important. Most recognized me and some knew me by name.

How was your experience with Edward Marut?
He was very candid and answered all my questions when we met. I wanted detailed reasons of why and he patiently explained them in terms I could understand. I like things laid out and not sugar coated. He was able to provide this with me and I always left our meetings with positive thoughts.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
Take notes, ask questions. Always remember you are your best advocate.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I went through 4 IVF cycles. I believe there first was the antagonist. It resulted in a chemical pregnancy. I don't remember the second. There other 2 were Lupron Microflare and Lupron Stop (which finally worked). I always needed more than average days off stims, and the higher dose. I also took baby aspirin for my final and successful cycle. I never had a huge amount of follicles and only ever received 6/time... With only 3/time mature.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments.
It's busy and there are lots of patients. There are multiple waiting rooms. But because it's a big clinic, they have a large window to come in for monitoring. It never affected my work schedule.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Marut.
I had insurance so everything was through that. I really met my Max OOP for the year.

FCI is a huge fertility machine. It must be successful to grow to its current size. Be your own advocate. Ask and demand answers. The doctors are overworked and fallible - don't blindly trust them...Not all my scripts were called in. I spent hours trying to straighten it out and with my trigger booster, lost valuable time the drug could have been working in my system. I was yelled at, ignored, my calls went unreturned. I was made promises and guarantees when I didn't know how ridiculous it is for a fertility Dr to make guarantees. I trusted my Dr and that was a mistake. My next fertility Dr. said I was overmedicated and my results might have been different if my Dr. had treated me as an individual...

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
After my initial consultation and testing, I did not see or speak with Dr. Marut until my cycle had failed. I called and asked to speak with him and was told I needed to speak with a nurse who would relay my questions and call me back. I did not feel my treatment was individualized for me.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My nurse was rude, yelled at me and showed no compassion. I finally began crying one day explaining I was single, did not have a partner, and was alone and could she please be nicer to me.

How was your experience with Edward Marut?
I was told Dr. Marut specialized in women over 40. I had done one previous cycle in CA and it was recommended I do one additional cycle. Dr. Marut criticized my Dr., her protocol, the results I achieved - and guaranteed me better results with him. NEVER did he mention there was a possibility of failure. Nor was it discussed that he would not be present or available to answer questions. After my trigger, Dr Marut said I needed a "booster", except one wasn't prescribed. By the time I was able to get the prescription, the clinic said I had lost valuable hours that the medication could have been working. Plus I needed help with the injection, which the clinic said it could only help with if I came during its business hours. Had I had the prescription, I could have - but I didn't have the medication. The following day, the day of my retrieval, I was shocked to meet another Dr. It had never been mentioned to me that Dr. Marut would not be doing my retrieval. The Dr. who did the retrieval barely acknowledged me - I was check on the list of surgeries. When my embryos began to decline, I begged to speak with Dr. Marut and I was told no. I wanted to implant, but I couldn't even reach Dr. Marut to discuss. My embryos all died and I was left devastated. When I met with Dr. Marut again for my post-consult, he basically shrugged and said "try again". I was out of pocket... another cycle wasn't possible at that time. It was an awful experience made more horrible by Dr. Marut and FCI - neither took accountability for the promises and guarantees made.
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Marut?
Stay on top of him. Don't take no for an answer if you want to speak with him. Ask who will perform your surgery and if you don't like the answer, speak up.
Describe the protocols Edward Marut used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I was supposed to be on BCP, but there was a miscommunication and I was not. I was on 450 Gonal F and 150 Menopur, adding in ganirelex toward the end of my cycle. I do not remember my trigger, and I was supposed to take a booster but it was not prescribed.

I don't have any concerns with how the clinic [FCI] was ran...I worked with Kathleen Brady whom was a Godsend. She always responded to me emails promptly or phone calls. She was very compassionate as this process is very emotional and stressful. Tammi Bono was also very helpful with obtaining extra medications for me and she was very nice...Dr. Kaplan was amazing. He was confident in me using our own eggs and ICSI with my husband. We were very defeated after our first IVF cycle failed with another MD and after leaving Dr. Kaplan's office we were ready to try again and very glad we did. Without him I would not have my 13 month old Norah!

During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
Dr. Kaplan told my husband and I straight out what we should expect with our cycle. I was told with the previous MD Dr. Todd Deustch that I would need donor eggs and Dr. Kaplan did not agree with that and gave my husband a lot of confidence when we went into our next cycle of IVF.

Without him I would not have my 13 month old Norah!
What one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brian Kaplan?
Dr. Kaplan is very knowledgeable in his field. He has practiced dealing with infertility for many years and gives it to you straight. He doesn't beat around the bush and lets you know everything. Very awesome MD. If we had the extra income I would be doing another round of IVF with him!
Describe the protocols Brian Kaplan used in your cycles and their degree of success.
I had about 10-11 days of medication stimulation. I used Follistim, Menopur, Ganirelex, and 5 days of growth hormone. I can't recall the exact protocol, but I had 20 follicles, 9 were retrieved and 6 were mature. Five embryos fertilized and we went to day 5. We have a 4BB blast transferred and an early blast. We have one morula that they were going to try and keep and see if it grows by day 6 and it arrested.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Brian Kaplan.
Unfortunately our insurance only covered the workup and monitoring during the IVF process. We have to pay out of pocket for the medications, retrieval and transfer. It was about $15,000 for everything.

I've heard it [FCI] described as a "baby factory". I personally don't think this is completely fair. It seemed to me that the doctors were willing to and wanting to deviate from "normal" protocols for individual women and do what is best for each patient. I even had a doctor perform a procedure on a holiday at the request of Dr. Sipe just because I had been traveling and if we didn't do it on this particular day, my next IVF would have been delayed by another month.

I've heard it described as a "baby factory". I personally don't think this is completely fair. I even had a doctor perform a procedure on a holiday at the request of Dr. Sipe just because I had been traveling and if we didn't do it on this particular day, my next IVF would have been delayed by another month. He didn't have to do this, but he was willing to help us out. I appreciate that it's a huge clinic as it meant I didn't have to "cycle with other women" - we did it on my cycle, and there were doctors available every day of the week. Dr. Sipe did not perform all of my procedures, but that didn't bother me, either, as I know all the doctors at this clinic are very good at what they do. Although at first I felt a bit nameless in the clinic, by the time I got pregnant with my twins, the nurses and office staff were asking to see the ultrasound pics and celebrating with me. They knew me by name and were so compassionate and kind. I cried when we left for the final time because although I was glad to have that journey behind me, I appreciated the people who worked in the clinic very much and still kind of miss seeing them at 6:00 in the morning! It was also super helpful that they have clinics all over Chicagoland as I was able to do a lot of the monitoring at a clinic that was closer to my place of work, thus meaning I didn't miss work as much as I otherwise would have.
During treatment, did you feel like you were treated like a number or a human?
My husband and I were very hesitant to pursue IVF for ethical reasons. Rather than just writing us off or dismissing our concerns, he addressed our concerns and encouraged us to talk with a Christian doctor we trusted or a pastor at our church. It is thanks to his willingness to listen that we now have 3 beautiful children.
Describe your experience with your nurse.
My final primary nurse (I had several over the years) was awesome (how can I not remember her name?!). She was so caring and was willing to talk on the phone as long as I needed, answered any stupid questions I had (I had already gone through 2 IVFs and an FET at this point, so you would think I didn't have any more questions). She was so compassionate - I really like her a lot. The first I had no longer works at FCI, but she was terrible - if she was still working there after messing up one of my cycles really badly - resulting in cancelling it and delaying starting again for 2 months - we would have requested a different nurse. Thankfully she had moved on (of her own choice). The second was ok - Amanda, she just didn't have great "bedside manners", but she was efficient and organized. She may have been going through something because some days she was really friendly and others she seemed to be in a bad mood.
